The Jacob Burns Film Center and NYU Tisch School of the Arts will offer three intensive film programs this fall to inspire local creatives.

Are you an aspiring screenwriter looking to hone your craft? How about a cinephile who’s eager to expand your film knowledge? On June 6, the Jacob Burns Film Center announced its collaboration with New York University Tisch School of the Arts to bring three innovative programs to Westchester County.

The immersive programs will be open to local high school students and adult screenwriters. The sessions are designed to assist creatives with sharpening their skills, growing their network, and ultimately shaping the next generation of storytellers.

Set to launch this fall, the programs will provide an exceptional creative space and opportunity to gain top-tier cinematography knowledge from industry experts.

“The collaboration between JBFC and NYU Tisch is an extraordinary opportunity for young artists to explore their passion for storytelling,” says Mary Jo Ziesel, JBFC Executive Director. “By removing barriers to entry and providing mentorship from experienced industry professionals, we aim to create a pathway for students to pursue their dreams in the film industry.”

The first program, the JBFC Emerging Screenwriter Fellowship, is a competitive screenwriting intensive led by NYU Professor Jeremy J. Kamps. It’s aimed at high school students in grades 10 and 11 whose hearts are set on having a career in the industry.

The inspiring six-week program will consist of 13 interactive sessions that will take place on the JBFC Campus. The program will admit 10 students who will take home a strong understanding of screenwriting, learn the elements of a film pitch, and gain experience and confidence working within a collaborative workshop setting. In addition, the 10 future-screenwriters will have their short film screenplay performed at a table read by professional actors.

“We are delighted to join forces with JBFC in this collaborative venture,” says Patti Pearson, Assistant Dean of Global Strategic Initiatives at NYU Tisch. “By providing a supportive and inclusive environment, we aim to nurture the next generation of storytellers and equip them with the necessary skills to excel in their creative pursuits.”

The second program caters to adult creatives seeking a continued cinema studies education. This six-week program is led by a handful of NYU faculty and PhD candidates who will each dissect a portion of cinema, giving participants a keen understanding of the art form.

If the closing credits start rolling and you instantly have a full movie analysis built up in your head, this third course could be for you. NYU Tisch professor Rob Morton, an experienced screenwriting instructor, will host a series of deep dives into recent films.

Filmmaker and JBFC Board Member Ron Howard adds, “This partnership exemplifies the JBFC’s commitment to fostering diversity and inclusivity in the arts by opening doors for aspiring creatives, and helping the next generation of storytellers hone their skills.”
