Home Theater: Three New Releases to Buy in March 2013

What to add to your queue this month

Wreck-It Ralph
Release Date: March 5, Walt Disney Animation Studios
Sure, when you watch Wreck-It Ralph with your kids, they’ll love the candy-colored video-game universe and the way one digital villain goes on a quest to become a hero. You, on the other hand, will catch all of the old-school video-game references—going all the way back to Q*bert—that are likely to zoom straight over their heads. It’s enough to make you wish that the Nathan’s on Central Avenue in Yonkers still had its coin-op arcade.
Release Date: March 26, HBO Studios
Pity the poor vice president of the United States. The Veep is one heartbeat away from the most powerful position in the country, yet ultimately powerless. At least that’s the case for Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Selina Meyer in Veep, an HBO series that plays the red tape, bureaucracy, and drudgery of Washington DC for laughs. The series comes from creator Armando Iannucci, who tackled similarly thorny political material in the acclaimed movie In the Loop and British series The Thick of It.
Release Date: March 19, The Criterion Collection
There are few directors as respected as Terrence Malick. Unfortunately for fans, there are also few directors who work on a timeline as long as Malick, who has so far averaged a film once every seven or eight years. (His most recent was 2011’s The Tree of Life; his biggest gap was 20 years between Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line.) Until we get the next one, the Criterion Collection will let you enjoy Malick’s first feature film, Badlands, an impressionistic look at notorious serial killer Charles Starkweather (Martin Sheen). As usual, the Criterion version is lush with extras, including a making-of documentary with Sheen, co-star Sissy Spacek, and art director Jack Fisk.
