Looking for a holiday craft that you can do with your kids during winter break in Westchester? Crafting holiday cards is simple and offers endless possibilities when it comes to designs. Plus, it’s a good way to keep the little ones engaged and reduce screen time. Here’s how to get started.
Materials
- Cardstock (variety of colors)
- Scissors
- Glue stick or glue dots
- Markers
- Glitter pens (optional)
- Cotton balls (optional)
- Templates (optional)
Instructions
Start with two pieces of 8 1/2 x 11-inch cardstock. Fold them both in half.
Plan what you would like to have pop up inside your card. If you want trees, decide how many trees; this number will determine how many slits you cut in this step. If you want to spell out something like “merry,” you will need to cut two slits for each letter or element. Once you have determined what your pop-up will include, take one of the folded pieces of paper, and cut the number of slits in the fold about a ½-inch to 1-inch wide, as shown.
Open the folded piece with the slits and take every other slit and fold it inside the card as shown.
Take other cardstock (red for words, green for trees, yellow for stars, brown for gingerbread, etc.) and cut out what you want to pop up inside the card.
Using a glue stick or glue dots, attach your pop-up, cut out pieces to the slits inside the card.
To finish, add the other piece of folded paper from Step 1, and glue it to the outside of the piece with the slits and pop-up pieces. This will now be the outside of your card. Write on the outside or add more letters, trees, gingerbread, etc. Don’t forget to sign the inside or write a personal message!
