Think you’re ready to hit the trails? Make sure you follow these navigation and safety strategies to make the most of your trip.

Download Hiking Project, Avenza, and AllTrails from the App Store or Google Play. These feature a variety of free and paid mapping tools. There is also a variety of phone apps to help you navigate your way back to your vehicle.

For safety’s sake, it’s advisable to hit the trail with a hiking buddy. Widen your circle by connecting with groups like the Westchester Trails Association, Adirondack Mountain Club, and the Appalachian Mountain Club to get the dirt on outings for people of varying abilities.
