For safety’s sake, it’s advisable to hit the trail with a hiking buddy. Widen your circle by connecting with groups like the Westchester Trails Association, Adirondack Mountain Club, and the Appalachian Mountain Club to get the dirt on outings for people of varying abilities.

Always carry a sufficient supply of water. Experts suggest adults drink one-half to one liter of water per hour, depending on climate, duration, and difficulty. Also a must: energy bars/nuts, etc. Plan to be out for longer than expected.
