Pelham artist Katy Garry is engendering joy with her unique paintings, which make use of mixed media and bright, cheerful colors.
Katy Garry wants to make art “fun and simple” for you. The pop-art expressionist and Pelham resident creates canvases that burst with energetic brushstrokes and an upbeat vibe. Splashes of bright color rush each painting, evidence of her passion for her art. “The term that would best describe my artwork is ‘unapologetically happy,’” says Garry. “My goal is to create something that a client will look at in their space that will make their day better.”
Her pieces vary in scale and are often bold without being overwhelming, effortlessly making a statement whether in boutiques and commercial spaces or in private residences. In addition to ready-made paintings in acrylic, encaustic, and mixed media on canvas, wood, and paper (which are available for purchase online and in galleries), Garry is rapidly expanding her custom commissions business. “I love working with interior designers and clients directly,” she says. “Creating artwork that coordinates with the space, fabrics, and colors that are chosen is exciting. I love creating artwork that feels comfortable and natural with the design intention. The process is collaborative and fun.”
Garry has always been creative. Growing up in Bronxville, she developed an interest in painting as a kid and as a teen started a business that sold furniture she’d painted, then stenciled with college pennants. After graduating from high school, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in fine art and art history from College of the Holy Cross before working in fashion merchandising, design, and production for such brands as Brooks Brothers, Coach, Vineyard Vines, and Victoria’s Secret. But the long hours and the commute began to wear on Garry, who, roughly four years ago, decided to focus on painting professionally. She created a studio at home and let her nature take its course.
These days, the busy mom of three has her sights set on beautifying spaces in a different economic sector. “I’m looking forward to working on more commercial space installations,” Garry says. “I’ve had the good fortune of working with Dudley Stephens, as well as some of the local shops in Westchester County. I’d like to continue to expand that and even expand into hotels or long-term residential spaces.” Garry also plans to continue doing art parties for adults.
