Bill Clinton and James Patterson Novel to Be Adapted for Showtime Series

Most 71-year-olds look forward to relaxing in their retirement. Former president Bill Clinton (a resident of Chappaqua) however has teamed up with bestselling author James Patterson (a Newburgh native and resident of Scarborough) to write a Washington-based political thriller.

Due June 11, 2018, The President Is Missing will deal with the disappearance of a sitting president, with deep insider knowledge and perspectives on the workings of our nation’s capitol. It will be the first time a U.S. president has ever co-authored a thriller.

Despite the months until the book’s release date, CBS’s Showtime has already secured the rights to adapt the novel into a television series. David Nevins, President and CEO of Showtime Networks Inc. called the deal “a coup of the highest order.”

“The pairing of President Clinton with fiction’s most gripping storyteller promises a kinetic experience, one that the book world has salivated over for months and that now will dovetail perfectly into a politically relevant, character-based action series for our network.”

Clinton has already authored non-fiction books including My Life and Back to Work: Why We Need Smart Government for a Strong Economy, Between Hope and History, earning him his own bestseller credits in the process. This will be his first novel. Patterson, meanwhile, holds the Guinness World Record for most New York Times #1 bestsellers, and has written nearly 150 novels across adult, young-adult, and children’s fiction, and numerous short fiction. (Fun fact: he routinely sells more copies than Stephen King, John Grisham, and Dan Brown … combined.)

“I’m really enjoying writing this book and working with Jim, and I can’t wait to see Showtime bring the characters to life,” says Clinton.

Patterson expressed similar praise for his coauthor, saying, “The White House is such an exciting world to explore and is made even more so with the unique insights of a former President. Rich storytelling opportunities for this series abound.”
