7 Socially Conscious Ways to Spend Your Weekend

Westchester loves to go out and have a fun weekend. We do, however, also try to give back to our community as much as we can. No one said the two have to be mutually exclusive events, though! Whether it’s fundraisers, educational initiatives, or simply movie night, we always love finding fun ways to better ourselves and our community!

Friday, March 29

First up: This Friday the Junior League of Central Westchester will be hosting its Big Night Out at Kanopi, high atop the Ritz-Carlton in White Plains. With music, food, cocktails, raffles, and a silent auction, it’d be a great night out all on its own, however the night will honor local partner and diaper donation nonprofit No Child Wet Behind. Plus, all proceeds from the event will go to fund the JLCW’s community projects, so it’s a win-win! Tickets are $150 apiece or two for $275.

Looking to do something good a little closer to home? Hammocks Middle School in Larchmont is hosting its annual STEM-tastic festival, a free public celebration of all things science, tech, engineering, and math! Families can enjoy over 25 hands-on experiences, along with food and drinks, prizes, and more, ensuring Westchester’s future leaders get access to the leading technologies and education!

Into conservation? Westchester Land Trust invites everyone to Lewisboro’s William K. Love Preserve for Big Night: Amphibian Migration Count. Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like. You and your fellow nature lovers can learn all about our semi-aquatic neighbors and search for frogs, toads, and salamanders migrating through the nature preserve. Remember your flashlight!

Saturday, March 30

Even just heading out to the bar for the night can help the world. Mickey Spillane’s, a mainstay of Eastchester’s nightlife, will this Saturday be hosting Pints for Pat, a local event raising money for the Pat Tillman Foundation. The NFL pro died while serving in the military after September 11, and in his honor the foundation was created to benefit veterans and now their spouses with education scholarships. Mickey’s will host open bar for two hours, accompanied by food, entertainment, raffles, and yet another silent auction. Tickets are $50.

St. Baldrick’s Foundation will be dropping by Captain Lawrence Brewery this weekend for its second annual No Hair, Don’t Care event, raising funds and awareness to help fight childhood cancer. No, you don’t have to shave your head to join in, there’s plenty of fun ways to help out! The event is free, but make sure to check out the website and see if you might be interested in volunteering. The event has already raised more than $26,000 of its $35,000 goal, so see if you can be the one to put them over the top!

Sunday, March 31

Prefer to take in a film? This Sunday, the Bedford Playhouse will be screening The Case Against 8, a documentary following the legal team and plaintiffs who — over four years — argued against the constitutionality of California’s Prop 8, an amendment which in 2008 restricted the definition of marriage to heterosexual unions only. The screening of the Sundance and SXSW award-winning film will be followed by discussion and Q&A with prolific local author and one of the primary subjects of the film, attorney David Boies.

Close out the weekend with a drink and some seasonal festivities alongside your fellow Westchesterites in an evening of joy, and inclusivity. Winter ends and we celebrate renewal and transformation, so what better way to do so then with one of Westchester’s only regularly recurring drag nights? Spring It On will commence at Peekskill’s Birdsall House promptly at 8 p.m., hosted by the indomitable Dotty Spartans with co-host Gigi Cutina, special guest Sassy Frass, and sick beats dropping all night long courtesy of DJ Mercedes. It’ll be a night of pure entertainment and acceptance of everyone — and with no cover charge we mean everyone!
