While restaurants around the county are gearing up for Cinco de Mayo this weekend, we recognize that might not be everybody’s copa de té. For anyone looking for something a bit different — or just some day-before shenanigans — we’ve rounded up some of the most interesting, useful, and entertaining events happening in Westchester.
First off, “May the Fourth be with you.” Yes, it’s the semi-official annual Star Wars holiday. Hunker down with some blue milk and a nice nerf steak and enjoy the galaxy far, far away with your family. But if marathoning three to ten films (and ancillary materials) doesn’t scream “active weekend” for you…

The SPCA of Westchester Dog Walk and Pet Fair is going down at FDR State Park in Yorktown Heights from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Enjoy a pleasant walk down the 2.5-mile path with Fido, peruse some new chew toys in the vending village, and enjoy a few all-species family activities like doggy tattoos, a puppy kissing booth, and more. And speaking of fairs….
The Scarsdale Business Alliance is holding its annual Health, Beauty & Wellness Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free event includes fitness classes, educational workshops and presentations, fun activities, local exhibitors, giveaways and promotions, and even a few tasty treats from Scarsdale eateries. We know mom will love it, which actually reminds us…
Mother’s Day is coming up, readers. Time to start hitting the pavement to find that perfect gift, and if our 2019 guide isn’t to your (or mom’s) liking, nothing beats some fine, locally made crafts, art, spa goods, or gourmet treats! Spring Crafts at Lyndhurst runs all weekend on the iconic Tarrytown grounds and showcases over 275 local and regional crafters, artisans, makers, and more. Meanwhile, the Eastchester Public Library is hosting a smaller gathering of the Northeast Etsy Artists Collective for its Mother’s Day Artisan Market. (You might remember the NEAC from Westchester Magazine’s 2018 Mother’s Day Etsy Gift Guide.) Not only do your dollars spent here go straight to local creators, but 15% of sales go to the Friends of the Eastchester Public Library, so it’s win-win. Of course these aren’t the only winners today…
May 4 is also the biggest day in racing, the Kentucky Derby! Westchester’s own Empire City Casino will be hosting A Day at the Races. On top of its own races, Derby coverage, and giveaways, the casino will be holding — what else? — a fancy hat contest! Guests can stop by the raceway’s photo booth to snap a photo in their Belmont best. Photos will be posted to the ECC Facebook page and the most-engaged photos will win a cash prize! If you’re not big on the sport of kings, though…
How about the King of Queens? Just a hop, skip, and a Paul Blart away, Kevin James will be performing at The Palace Theatre in Stamford. The Grown Ups co-star and Emmy nominee hits the stage at 8 p.m., and while tickets are almost sold out you can still grab a few if you act fast. Kevin Can Wait, but you shouldn’t.
