A great year for television and cinema usually means a great year for Halloween costumes. This year is no different. According to Yon Zweibon, manager of Beyond Costumes in Yonkers, the hot costumes of 2015 come from box-office hits like Minions and Avengers: Age of Ultron and popular TV shows such as Game of Thrones and Orange Is the New Black.
Certain costumes, such as Elsa from Frozen or Captain America, remain popular after their year is up, says Zweibon, but the trends revolve around what’s on the small and big screens. “Every year, the base is the same with a few current movies that add a few new costumes,” she says. Zweibon helped us select the “it” costumes for 2015, which are all related to movies or TV shows.

For HerThe Roaring Twenties flapper girl. The Great Gatsby made the flapper girl a popular costume two years ago, but, this year, a Boardwalk Empire-inspired version, which manages to be elegant and sexy, is the “it” pick. |
For KidsThe Minion. Since the Minions movie came out, these spunky creatures have been on merchandise everywhere—including Halloween costumes. Parents might find the Minions annoying, but this costume is a winner among girls and boys. |
