This Nonprofit Auction House Offers Great Finds for Worthy Causes

The Benefit Shop is treasure-trove full of amazing items.

This pretty pair of vintage Asian ceramic foo dog statues recently went for less than $500.

This year, don’t have a meltdown trying to find that out-of-this-world gift for that special someone. Mount Kisco’s The Benefit Shop, referred to by Antiques & Arts Weekly as the “secret source for some of the best interior decorators of Westchester,” is a treasure-trove full of amazing items looking for a second lease on life.

After working on Wall Street for 22 years, Pam Stone, founder and president of The Benefit Shop Foundation Inc. 501(c)3, needed a career change. She had been hooked on flea markets and estate sales since childhood and decided to go into the business she’d always loved — but with a twist. In 2009, Stone set up The Benefit Shop (www.thebenefitshop.org), a nonprofit auction house, which, after business expenses, donates all of its proceeds to charity. As a result, the foundation gives to more than 30 organizations in the greater-Westchester area, including Northern Westchester Hospital, SPCA of Westchester, and Mount Kisco Child Care Center.

The Benefit Shop’s inventory is vast, selling 1,500 to 2,000 items a month worth of donated and consigned “estate content,” which, of course, yields the ancillary benefit of big tax deductions for donors. The shop has auctioned off lithographs from Picasso and Keith Haring, Mid-Century Modern furniture, first-edition children’s books, handbags from designers like Chanel, a glass sculpture from the renowned French company Lalique, and even a vintage Rolls Royce. “When a new truck comes in,” says Stone, “it’s like Christmas morning. Everyone wants to run and see what’s coming in.”

Anyone can visit the company’s new 8,500 sq. ft. space, view the items up for auction, and leave an in-person bid. In addition to their own website, the company also utilizes auction sites LiveAuctioneers and invaluable.com, allowing individuals to place bids online.
