Most of us don’t give any thought to what’s in the bottle of water we just bought. It’s only water, right?
Asarasi is out to change that, by bottling sparkling water from an interesting source: maple trees.
On an outing with his daughter, watching sap being boiled down to make maple syrup, founder and New York native Adam Lazar had his aha! moment. Watching a maple-syrup producer pouring gallons of water down the drain, Lazar thought: Why not try bottling this new source of incredibly pure water?
Now, he has arrangements with maple farmers throughout New York State to let him know when the sap starts running. He sends trucks to collect the run-off water, brings it to his facilities, where light carbonation is added, and then it’s bottled.
It’s a win-win for everyone. The farmers get an additional income stream; Asarasi has a renewable and sustainable source for pure water; consumers get sparkling bottled water they can feel good about drinking. Or, as Adam says, “If you’re going to drink bottled water, we can give you something that will affect your community so that the money will stay in the community.” To reduce the environmental footprint, the packaging is produced with a 100 percent recyclable glass bottle with a twist-off cap.
The water is lightly carbonated with fine bubbles. You might detect the slightest hint of maple, or you might just be imagining it.
It’s priced about the same as other bottled waters and available at county ShopRites, the Katonah Reading Room, Organic Pharmer, Ladle of Love, and other specialty stores and restaurants across Westchester. Check for locations near you at www.asarasi.com.
