The Latest News From Westchester's Food and Dining Scene

Everything you need to know about our local foodie culture.

Comforting Tuscan dishes (polenta, soups, short ribs with gnocchi) and the coastal cuisine of Campania inspires the menu at Trattoria 141 (141 Chatsworth Ave, Larchmont; 914.937.7200), which opened in July in the space that previously housed Iron Horse Larchmont. On the menu: peppers stuffed with risotto, chopped meat, and mozzarella; seafood ravioli; and a fiery veal scaloppini al inferno. Jimmy Resulbegu, owner of the now-defunct Il Sogno in Port Chester, co-owns Trattoria 141 with his wife.

Eggplant Parmesan at Tarry Lodge, one of many restaurants participating in Hudson Valley Restaurant Week.

The well-respected Flames Steakhouse (121 E Main St, Elmsford; 914.592.3500) has recently reopened in a new space that had held Capatosta Trattoria and, prior to that, A’Mangiare. The original Flames location in Briarcliff Manor was sold by chef-owner Nikolla Vulaj last year due to illness (it’s now known as Flames Bar and Grill). Vulaj is back doing what he is most passionate about: dry-aging cuts such as bone-in Prime shell steak in-house for 30 days and serving them along with jumbo shrimp cocktail and baked clams oreganata. Desserts are made in-house, and the California-heavy wine list has bottles mostly in the $50–$100 range.

Another newish chophouse, Spark Valley Steakhouse (3360 Crompond Rd, Yorktown Heights; 914.930.8688), is also open. Yorktown resident Chef Tim Prengjoni offers a menu of both dry- and wet-aged steaks, including rib-eye, petite filet mignon and New York sirloin, plus entrées such as 3–3½-pound lobsters, broiled shrimp, and organic roast chicken.

The new La Casona Mexican Fusion Cuisine (238 Washington Ave, New Rochelle; 914.365.2389) eschews the typical kitschy sombrero-and-Mexican-flag decor and opts instead for exposed wood beams and stone-tile floors. The menu is also somewhat atypical, with dishes that combine Mexican culinary tradition with global influences: grilled calamari with sautéed green tomatillos; penne and sautéed chicken in a wine sauce of ginger, jalapeño, and cilantro; and Baja fish tacos topped with a spicy cabbage slaw.

Pizza at Tomato & Co.

Tomato & Co., offering both traditional Neapolitan pies, plus innovative, contemporary pizzas, is the latest addition to Savor Westchester at The Westchester (125 Westchester Ave, 4th flr, White Plains).

The fall edition of Hudson Valley Restaurant Week begins on October 30 and runs through Nov 12. The event features 200-plus restaurants from eight counties, offering three-course dinners and lunches, costing $32.95 and $22.95, respectively.
