Spend a Weekend Exploring These Local Landmarks

Eleven local landmarks partner to increase visitation to Hudson Valley historical sites.

Ironically, the landmarks nearest you are the ones most likely to be overlooked in favor of those farther away. That tendency is particularly regrettable here, considering how much rich history we have in our own backyard. That’s why 11 local historical sites have banded together to encourage visitors and residents alike to tour our attractions. Called Explore Lower Hudson Valley, the initiative is a self-guided tour of the cultural and recreational activities right in our area — no car needed.

Explore Lower Hudson Valley is designed to be an easy, inexpensive way to see Untermyer Gardens, Hudson River Museum, The Old Croton Aqueduct
Trail & NY State Historic Park, Philipse Manor Hall, Philipsburg Manor, Sunnyside, Lyndhurst, Kykuit, Wave Hill, the Edward Hopper House, and Palisades Interstate Park. Visitors will be able to spend a day-trip, weekend getaway, or extended vacation traveling to destinations by train, foot, bike, taxi, and bus, exploring the natural beauty and culture of each.

Spearheaded by The Untermyer Gardens Conservancy, Explore Lower Hudson Valley seeks to provide an Upstate experience close to home. Stephen Burns, president of The Untermyer Gardens Conservancy, says the initiative should increase visitation to the area while generating business for local restaurants, shops, and hotels. “[The initiative] will highlight the area’s unique resources of national interest and heighten an appreciation by locals of their significant natural and historical sites,” says Burns.

While Explore Lower Hudson Valley will provide a suggested itinerary, visitors will be able to build their own itineraries to tour as many of the 11 sites as they choose.
