The next time you’re driving down East Cross Street in Croton Falls, pump the brakes when you reach Lift Trucks Project. That’s where you’ll see the Drive-By Gallery, an fine-art venue for those on the go.
The idea stemmed from passersby who were stopping on the road and holding up traffic to peek inside the gallery, according to founder/artist Tom Christopher. But for all the kitschy-cool of the drive-by display, there’s more going on inside the gallery.
The former factory features 1,200 sq ft of space for display and shows, including folk art from the Great Depression years, tattoo flash pieces, and a mural created in Puerto Rico, in collaboration with Lift Trucks Project.
Something Christopher is especially excited about is his gallery’s brand-new project in conjunction with Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, which awarded Christopher its first-ever fine-art virtual-reality commission. He, along with interns at Manhattan’s FIT, are creating paintings of the South Bronx in VR. The high-tech immersion project, on display this fall, is themed to steer patients away from opioids.

“Instead of taking Oxycontin, Vicodin, or something worse, you’re relaxing, looking at a painting,” says Christopher. “We want you to pick a painting from a virtual gallery and walk in the painting and forget where you are.”
