Bright Future

Hailing from small-town Oklahoma, John Fullbright is about as authentic as it gets when it comes to American-roots music. Noted for his “unassailable clarity” by the New York Times, Fullbright was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Americana Album and has taken home an ASCAP Harold Adamson Lyric Award. This month, the talented singer-songwriter will be taking the stage at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts in Katonah. A fan favorite among Caramoor attendees, Fullbright’s star is undoubtedly on the rise. Come to this area show and see why.

Pop Goes the Art

Andy Warhol is credited by many as having said that in the future, everyone would be famous for 15 minutes. Luckily, this afternoon event for kids ages 2 to 8 lasts a whole lot longer. The Bruce Museum’s Warhol Summer Bash, inspired by the its exhibition Spring Into Summer With Warhol and Friends, features a performance of ’60s- and ’70s-inspired music by Little Rockers. Taking place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the event will also include musical activities with instruments, as well as a chance for kids to get on their feet and dance — making for one wholly original rock-inspired outing.

Newman’s Own

Let’s just take a second to sum up some of Randy Newman’s mind-boggling accolades: two Academy Awards, six Grammys, three Emmys, a BAFTA, and 20 Oscar nominations — just to name a few. Suffice it to say, music lovers are psyched that the mind behind the scores of such films as Toy Story, Parenthood, and Monsters, Inc. will be taking the stage this month at the Tarrytown Music Hall. A Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee who has been covered by artists ranging from Bette Midler to Art Garfunkel, Newman and his distinctively droll delivery are a rare regional treat.

Come Fourth

You know what Independence Day means: fireworks, food, and plenty of family time. Tick off all the boxes one day early at the Kensico Dam Music Fest and Fireworks on the plaza’s grounds in Valhalla. Families are invited to bring a picnic and blanket for an evening of patriotic music by the Benson-Scott Big Band, beginning at 6 p.m., followed by an eye-popping fireworks display. With free admission, this annual event is a great way to wish our country a Happy Birthday.

Sneak Peekskill

Now in just its third year, the Peekskill Film Festival has quickly become one of the county’s top destinations to catch cutting-edge cinema. With screenings ranging from indie flicks and feature films to avant-garde shorts and probing documentaries, those with a soft spot for the silver screen will want to head to Peekskill’s Paramount Hudson Valley Theater for this three-day event. A plethora of panels and workshops with Emmy Award-winning filmmakers, as well as parties and an entire day focused on student work, make for one truly monumental production.

Wild West Side

Check out the county’s up-and-coming actors when The White Plains Performing Arts Center presents West Side Story. Equal parts forbidden love and toe-tapping Broadway hits, this Stephen Sondheim musical follows an Upper West Side couple torn apart by feuding gangs. WPPAC’s unique production will be presented by Stage 2, a group that combines the Center’s conservatory and main-stage performers. Stage 2 allows college and community actors to work alongside professional artists, collaborating and learning under their guidance. Whether a Sondheimer or not, those hoping to see the future of theater will want to make a stop in White Plains.

Supergood

With hits like Superbad, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and two Anchorman movies under his belt, Judd Apatow has rocketed to the top of the comedy scene. A prolific director, Apatow also launched the HBO series Girls, as well as Amazon Studios’ upcoming The Big Sick. Add to that a duo of new documentaries he is helming for HBO and ESPN, respectively, and you have one mega-talent.This month, fans will be able to see the man in action onstage at Connecticut’s The Ridgefield Playhouse, where he will hit the boards for a night of razor-sharp wit and sidesplitting tales.
