Lucky Number Seven
There are legendary foreign films, and then there is The Seventh Seal. Ingmar Bergman’s visually stunning masterpiece, widely considered the apotheosis of art-house cinema, tells the story of a knight fresh from the Crusades contending with the advance of the black plague. When faced with his own demise, the knight must vie with Death itself. This month, local film buffs should head to Pleasantville’s Jacob Burns Film Center, where they can catch this internationally celebrated film, starring Max von Sydow and Bengt Ekerot, on the silver screen.
Kids and adults alike are invited to embark on an out-of-this-world adventure when Chitty Chitty Bang Bang takes the stage at the Irvington Town Hall Theater. Featuring the same cast of characters as the classic movie, this silly adaptation tells the story of an eccentric inventor and his curious kids as they outwit a duo of nefarious villains with the help of one extraordinary vehicle. Presented by the Clocktower Players junior and teen troupe, this stage show is well worth a watch for those searching for a little lighthearted fun.

Tapping into Dance
Time to enjoy some seriously fancy footwork. Mamaroneck’s Emelin Theatre is holding a season finale performance of its Dance Off The Grid series, when choreographer and tap impresario Felipe Galganni takes the stage with flamenco sensation Nélida Tirado. Named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch,” Tirado is a two-time BRIO Award winner, while Galgani has performed on hallowed stages at Lincoln Center and Central Park. The talented twosome will be joined by the choreography group Gaspard & Dancers during this rare area performance.
One of comedy’s hottest new stars is making his way to Westchester. Hannibal Buress, known for stints on acclaimed shows like Broad City and High Maintenance, as well as hit films like Spiderman: Homecoming and The Disaster Artist, is bringing his irreverent act to Port Chester’s Capitol Theatre this month. With upcoming roles in the film Tag, starring John Hamm, as well as Blockers, starring John Cena and Leslie Mann, this is one rising star you’ll want to catch.
Among the annals of folk-rock legends, few musicians stand higher than Art Garfunkel. One half of the iconic duo Simon and Garfunkel, the lauded musician is known for hits like “Mrs. Robinson,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” and “The Sound of Silence.” This month, Garfunkel will take the stage at the Tarrytown Music Hall, where the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee will perform hits from the lengthy oeuvre that earned him six Grammys and a People’s Choice Award.
Now You See It
If an afternoon of eye-popping illusions sounds like a good time, look no further than The Magic of Bill Blagg Live. Called “unbelievable” by USA Today and “Houdini times ten!” by NBC, Blagg is a bona fide pro when it comes to unbelievable stage shows. With two daytime performances suitable for the entire family, The Ridgefield Playhouse is the spot this month to catch some truly incredible and interactive sleight-of-hand.
Step back in time this spring with an entrancing performance of classical works performed on 17th- and 18th-century period instruments. The REBEL Ensemble for Baroque Music will take the stage at the Bedford Presbyterian Church to perform pieces by Mozart, Haydn, Gyrowetz, and Bach, on instruments from the time that the works were written. Known as one of the country’s top baroque ensembles, this performance is well worth a listen by anyone with a penchant for classical music.

Food for Thought
You may never look at your kitchen table quite the same way again after visiting The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum’s inventive new exhibition, The Domestic Plane: New Perspectives on Tabletop Art Objects. Running from May 20 to Jan 13, this expansive show, organized by no fewer than five curators, features the work of more than 70 artists who reimagine household objects into eye-popping objets d’art. Turns out everyday items, like dining sets and ice cream sundaes, make for some pretty impressive pieces.
