An American Revolution

Although the legendary artist Prince is no longer with us, his celebrated band is still happily hitting the road. This month, Prince’s beloved backup group, The Revolution, will be taking the stage at Port Chester’s Capitol Theatre with all the grooves and tunes audiences have come to expect. Consisting of Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman, BrownMark, Bobby Z, and Dr. Fink, the band that has racked up three Grammys and three American Music Awards is bringing their unique brand of psychedelic funk to the county. Fans of the multi-Platinum album Purple Rain will likely remember just why they fell in love with Prince’s music in the first place.

Goddess of Giggles

The actress and comedian Marion Grodin is truly a woman of many talents. Constantly headlining several New York City comedy clubs, Grodin has appeared in the films Three Long Years and The Joke’s on You. She has also shared the stage with comedy legends such as Jerry Seinfeld and Dave Chappelle, in addition to formerly hosting a CBS radio show and producing a duo of successful fundraisers. Local audiences now have a chance to enjoy an evening of this multitalented performer’s standup comedy at Stamford’s Palace Theatre, where they can see why this comedian’s star is on the rise.

Golden Boy

The actor, tenor, composer, playwright, and director Billy Porter has already racked up accolades most entertainers can only dream of. The Grammy, Tony, and Drama Desk Award-winning performer first made a splash as Lola in the Broadway megahit Kinky Boots. Since, he has appeared onstage alongside Audra McDonald and under the spotlight at New York’s Carnegie Hall. This month, all those with a soft spot for the Great White Way should head to Mamaroneck’s Emelin Theatre for an evening of incredible song by one of theater’s most respected young performers.

Rider Beware

Few hippy flicks of the 1960s can top Easy Rider. A combination of art-house sensibilities and classic American theming, this drama starring Jack Nicholson and Peter Fonda tells the story of two rebels on a perilous road trip across the heartland. On-screen this month at the Tarrytown Music Hall, the film was a 1961 box-office smash and favorite of critic Roger Ebert. Today, the movie is recognized as an American classic that forever altered cinema by proving that dark subject matter and avant-garde techniques could be commercially viable. This screening is a special treat for those craving a truly rugged masterwork up on the silver screen.

Mr. Wilson!

It wouldn’t be a stretch to call artist Fred Wilson a genius. In fact, the Bronx-born sculptor and installation artist won a MacArthur “Genius” Grant in 1999 and later represented the US in the 2003 Venice Biennial. One of the most revered living African American artists, Wilson’s work is always cause for a road trip — and the Neuberger Museum’s new exhibition, Fred Wilson, is no exception. A survey of the artist’s work from 1995 to the present, this astounding show features 76 pieces from Wilson’s studio, including three that have never before been exhibited.
