A Look at the JV Mall's Sweeping Overhaul

Under the Washington Prime Group, the Jefferson Valley mall seeks first-string status.

Haven’t shopped at the Jefferson Valley Mall in a while? You may be in for a surprise next time you hit the sales.

The once-sleepy, 34-year-old mall in Yorktown Heights — purchased by the Washington Prime Group of Columbus, Ohio, from Simon Property Group in 2015 — has been under renovation with its $40 million-plus facelift in full swing.

“Washington Prime saw an opportunity to increase the traffic and performance of the mall with some investments,” says General Manager Dave  Napolitan, who adds that the renovations are helping the mall to “reclaim some of the shoppers who went elsewhere.”

Alexa O’Rourke, director of marketing and business development at Jefferson Valley Mall, said the overall goal is to strengthen the mall’s bond with the community. “Our goal is to create a retail space that is also a community hub,” says O’Rourke, declining to comment on what effect the reno may have on rental prices.

In addition to the transformation of a former movie theater into a DICK’S Sporting Goods, the mall — at more than 90 percent occupancy at press time — has attracted ULTA beauty, the jewelry-and-accessories store Charming Charlie, and Charlotte Russe. Victoria’s Secret has been renovated and a PINK boutique added. The mall has also added All In Adventures, an escape-room attraction available for birthday parties.

A spruced-up food court includes American Deli and Cinnabon. Sit-down options will include Stone Rose Steakhouse and Home Pie Signature Pizza.

The mall also got a facelift. All entrances have been completely renovated with a new façade and brightly lit signage that is visible from Route 6. Eighties-style carports have been removed, and the blacktop on the upper level, by the Route 6 side, has been renovated. “The project is not over yet,” says O’Rourke. “We are always looking at different ways to enhance and develop the property.”

Expect to see more upgrades ahead.
