Choosing just a few local organizations each year to feature in our annual Small Business Awards article is never an easy feat. Yet, it’s a good challenge to face: We are lucky here in Westchester to have a thriving small-business scene; in fact, most of the businesses lining our Main Streets, office parks, repurposed historical buildings, home offices, and shared workspaces fall squarely in the small-biz category. From restaurants to law firms, retail shops, design studios, marketing firms, and everything in-between, these small businesses serve as employers, clients, vendors, and/or trusted places to frequent for our favorite goods and services. So, it makes sense to pay homage to these organizations in the pages of our magazine—and this marks our fourth year doing just that, in four categories: General Excellence, Outstanding Nonprofit, Outstanding Big Business Partner of Small Business, and Outstanding Advocate for Small Business. (All General Excellence and Outstanding Nonprofits must have fewer than 50 full-time employees, have been in business for at least two years, and have maintained a location in Westchester.) On the following pages, meet 14 winners whose successes prove that bigger isn’t always better.
