But summer can also be a time of discovery, an opportunity for students to expand their interests and explore their passions while experiencing summertime travel and adventure. And no one knows this better than Summer Discovery, the premier provider of summer academic enrichment programs that has served more than 100,000 students since its founding in 1966, nearly six decades ago.

Summer Discovery partners with some of the most prestigious universities across the country and internationally, including the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, Georgetown University, Dartmouth University, Georgetown University, University of Cambridge, and UCLA, to offer a wide selection of immersive, hands-on academic programs. Three distinct academic enrichment programs are offered for high school, middle school, and gifted students in grades 1-12, and programs are customized to align with each student’s academic interests. Middle and high school students can choose from over 300 courses tailored to each university’s area of expertise. They can choose to participate in either residential or commuter programs that run from 2 to 6 weeks.

“Summer Discovery provides a wide variety of immersive summer academic enrichment programs for students,” said Julia Geffner, Chief Digital & Marketing Officer at Summer Discovery. “We offer career-focused programs, passion-based projects, and everything in between—from learning about the business of sports at Real Madrid Graduate School in Spain to delving into fashion design at UCLA. Our summer programs are challenging and interactive, but there are no tests or grades. The summer is meant to be all about the student and exploring his or her interests. It is an opportunity for self-discovery, diving into future possible career paths from medicine to finance, data science, engineering, or law, building important life skills, and experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime adventure on a college campus.”

Summer Discovery programs for students in grades 9-12 consist of a dynamic blend of interactive college-level academics and immersive activities, which are complemented by fun activities on and off campus, including visits to amusement parks, local landmarks, outdoor adventures, and sporting events. Middle school students in grades 6-8 can choose from over 50 unique courses and workshops in an exploratory, hands-on learning environment and participate in unforgettable experiences both on and off campus. The Summer Institute for the Gifted offers gifted, talented, and high-potential students in grades 1-12 a customized, multidisciplinary curriculum, where students may choose from 38 courses, five campuses, and residential or commuter programs.

“All of our summer enrichment programs are taught by University faculty, who have expertise in that particular subject matter,” continued Geffner. “Students in our UCLA summer program, for example, will have the opportunity to take screenwriting classes that are taught by professional screenwriters. Students can learn first-hand from talent agents about the business of entertainment.”
Summer Discovery features a team of summer program specialists who work with families to understand the student’s areas of interest and create a personal, customized summer experience. The most popular programs fill up quickly, and applications are underway for summer 2024 programs. What a great way to spend your summer – exploring your interests and becoming better prepared for college life and beyond!
