When vertebral compression fractures cause intense pain and make it difficult to function, a minimally invasive procedure called Kyphoplasty can quickly relieve the pain and restore mobility. Brain and Spine Surgeons of NY is pleased to announce that they can now offer this procedure on an outpatient basis in their new state-of-the-art center, the Surgical Suites at Hudson Health in White Plains, NY. The procedure will soon be available at BSSNY’s Nyack location, as well.
Vertebral compression fractures are a common cause of acute back pain, particularly in older adults or among athletes who suffer a back injury. A vertebral compression fracture occurs when one or more of the spinal vertebrae collapse, causing the spine to shorten and become less stable. Vertebral compression fractures often occur in the lower back and can be extremely painful, especially when bone fragments from the fracture press against the nerves in the spinal column. These fractures are most frequently caused by osteoporosis, a condition that weakens the bones and makes them more fragile. Other possible causes include medical conditions that weaken bone density (such as bone cancer) and occasionally trauma from a hard fall.
Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that can be performed in about an hour. After sedating the patient, a small incision is made, and a balloon is inserted into the fractured vertebra. The balloon is then inflated to create a cavity, and bone cement is injected into the space to stabilize the vertebra. The balloon is then removed, and the incision is closed with stitches or surgical tape. Patients can usually go home the same day. Most report immediate pain relief after the procedure, and most can return to their normal daily activities within days.
While Kyphoplasty is typically an outpatient procedure, surgeons often need to perform the procedure in a hospital where the appropriate equipment is available. However, thanks to their newly equipped surgical suites, the physicians at BSSNY at White Plains can now offer Kyphoplasty procedures on-site in a quiet, stress-free environment without asking their patients to travel elsewhere or endure lengthy delays between steps in the process.
The new surgical suites at BSSNY are not only designed for patient comfort, they are also outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment that enables the surgeons to perform numerous procedures which were previously only available in a hospital operating room. Besides Kyphoplasty, the physicians can now perform a broad range of services in these on-site suites, including spinal cord stimulators, epidurals, spinal steroid injections, and other minimally invasive surgical procedures.
