Northwell is New York’s most awarded health system, with experts across every specialty working together to provide exceptional care. And with highly rated facilities including Northern Westchester Hospital and Phelps Hospital, Northwell offers the Westchester community direct access to its incredible care.
This care includes the most advanced neurosurgical services, ensuring patients can receive specialized treatment close to home without the need for extensive travel. David Stuart Gordon, MD has served as the regional chair of neurosurgery for Northwell since December 2020.
With awards that reflect a distinguished career, Dr. Gordon takes great pride in leading a team of advanced care specialists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and others—each contributing their distinct expertise, discipline and compassion to foster positive health outcomes.
Neurosurgery: At the Intersection of Medicine and Empathy
Dr. Gordon feels a strong sense of responsibility and pride in providing care to the community in which he lives. His celebrated career in neurosurgery began with a desire to engage with individuals and provide assistance to those in need. Influenced by the contributions of his father, a neuropsychologist, he pursued a similar path. However, his fascination with neuropharmacology, cognition, and memory ultimately exposed him to the neurosurgical operating room which got him hooked.
Today, he continues to offer vital medical services to those with conditions affecting blood flow to the brain, such as strokes, brain aneurysms, brain bleeds and carotid artery disease. These afflictions can be critical medical emergencies requiring immediate intervention, including medication and surgical procedures.
Dr. Gordon also specializes in skull-base neurosurgery, addressing tumors, aneurysms and other abnormalities at the base of the skull that can impair vision, hearing, speech, movement and cognitive function. His team employs advanced techniques, including minimally invasive surgery with endoscopes, to remove tumors and restore patients’ quality of life.
Gamma Knife Perfexion at Northern Westchester Hospital
Northwell is the only provider in Westchester that offers Gamma Knife radiosurgery. Offered at Northern Westchester Hospital, Gamma Knife surgery is a non-invasive, computer-assisted radiation therapy that directs precisely focused energy beams at tumors or lesions located in the brain and spine.
It’s commonly employed for treating brain tumors, including metastatic cancer, arteriovenous malformations and trigeminal neuralgia, among other medical conditions. The application of Gamma Knife radiosurgery is not limited to neurosurgery alone. Its availability in community hospitals such as Northern Westchester Hospital is particularly significant, as it brings capabilities that are typically found in larger hospitals in the city closer to home.
Center for Advanced Procedures at Phelps Hospital
Recently, Northwell has expanded its offerings by launching the Center for Advanced Procedures at Phelps Hospital (CAP), which includes a state-of-the-art neurointerventional biplane angiography suite. CAP is a multidisciplinary establishment focused on tackling complex cerebrovascular challenges associated with cerebral blood flow.
This facility, spanning nearly 9,000 square feet and costing $15.6 million, features an advanced biplane angiography suite. This innovative technology allows neuroendovascular surgeons to obtain dynamic, three-dimensional imaging of the blood vessels in the brain and spinal cord.
Highest Quality of Care
Dr. Gordon says that the primary objective of his neurosurgery program at Northwell is to protect patients and their families by ensuring the highest quality of care, the safest treatment alternatives and meticulously organized plans and strategies. This goal is realized through a compassionate, family-centered, patient-oriented and collaborative methodology that promotes the well-being of the broader community.
The Northwell Health System
As the largest health care system in New York state, Northwell offers extensive clinical expertise across its network. Its model is designed to ensure that patients don’t need to leave their communities, such as traveling to Long Island or Manhattan for surgical procedures. Patients can receive top-quality care in their local area, within a family-oriented setting like Phelps or Northern Westchester Hospital.
