Q&A Topic: High-technology Dentistry for the Whole Family and Treatment of Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Q: What innovative technologies do you use in your practice, and how do they improve the patient experience?
A: Our practice is called Advanced Dentistry of Westchester, because it offers patients of all ages the latest in dental care available in less than 1 percent of dental offices nationwide. What does that mean for patients? Areas of decay are diagnosed early using low radiation digital x-rays, intraoral photos, and Doppler images, which provide greater accuracy that you can clearly see and understand. Early detection means pinpointing problems at an earlier stage, so technology such as lasers and air abrasion can be used to clean out decay comfortably and painlessly without getting numb or using a drill while preserving more healthy tooth structure.

Q: Is there technology for more complex procedures?
A: Digital impressions can be taken (no mush in the back of your throat) and natural-looking, metal-free crowns created in one visit using a 3-D mill with CAD/CAM technology. For missing teeth, our Cone Beam CT machine takes 3-D x-rays, so implants can be planned safely and accurately. Multiple implants can be placed with computer-guided technology for even greater accuracy. When anesthesia is required, we can reverse the anesthetic so that you can get back to work and life more quickly.

Q: What about stopping problems before they start? Can technology be used for prevention?
A: For patients that have spent their entire lives treating cavities with fillings and crowns, a proven successful prevention program means you can finally save time, money, effort, and enjoy going to the dentist for simple cleanings. But prevention technology goes beyond the teeth. Oral cancer screening with the VELscope light, which is painless and has no side effects, enables detection of pre-cancerous cell changes, so treatment can be easier and more effective. Our home sleep test and special mouth guard for patients who snore and are at risk for Obstructive Sleep Apnea can decrease the chance of high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, depression, and diabetes.

Sabrina Magid-Katz, DMD

Q: How do you treat snoring and sleep apnea? What is a dentist’s role?
A: I lecture to dental societies about screening for and treating sleep disorders because dentists see patients at least twice a year, and can evaluate the structures in the mouth and throat which might block breathing during sleep and lead to serious medical conditions if untreated.  Once diagnosed we can make an oral appliance similar to a night or sports guard to treat the snoring and sleep apnea, or to just silence the noise if the problem is only snoring.  People who are unable to use other treatments, such as CPAP, find the oral appliance a much more comfortable alternative.

Q: How do you treat kids differently? Can technology help them have a good experience?
A: From the start, children enter a fun, non-threatening environment where they are never restrained and work with us for lifelong healthy teeth. Pictures of their teeth provide motivation to keep the “bugs” away. Patients watch our “tinkerbell” transilluminator make their teeth glow like jack-o-lanterns to see cavities inside of their teeth. Even fillings are painless and fun; kids call our laser the “popcorn machine,” since it makes popping noises without numbing or pain as it cleans the cavity. Sand and air also clean cavities comfortably without noise or worrying about needles or numb lips. It’s just a little fun at the pretend beach with the dentist.
