Healthy eating for autumn: Can’t Lose Diet – Harrison

How can I stay healthy this fall?

As the fall season kicks into high gear, you tend to move less, eat more, and pack on the pounds! Here are three tips from the nutritionists at the Can’t Lose Diet for enjoying a healthy eating lifestyle over the coming months:

Chicken Bone Broth – There is nothing more comforting than a hot cup of broth on a cold October day. Loaded with pure nutrition, you can drink it straight or make it the base for an asparagus soup. A number of Westchester-based merchants make it fresh on a daily basis – so pick it up on your way home!

An Apple a Day – Do not underestimate the nutritional value and delicious ways to enjoy an apple. Make our Baked Cinnamon Apple dessert that is enticing enough to consume every day. Eat an apple one hour before you dine out, which will help you avoid stuffing yourself with pre-dinner bread rolls. Diced Honeycrisp apple pieces add a burst of flavor to your tuna salad lunch.

Vegetable Smoothies – Many people just do not eat enough veggies on a daily basis. Make it easier to meet your nutritional needs by creating a simple, tasty veggie-oriented smoothie! Cucumber and apple, or spinach and strawberries, make for a delicious, fruity drink!

Contact us for more details on the above suggestions.

Understanding the difference between traditional and CEREC® crowns: The Center for Cosmetic Dentistry

What’s the difference between traditional and CEREC® crowns?

Traditional crowns and CEREC® crowns both have the same basic purpose. They are durable tooth restorations custom-designed to reinforce a compromised tooth and prevent further deterioration, while simultaneously improving function and aesthetics. With that in mind, the process of creating a traditional dental crown is typically quite different when compared to a CEREC® crown. A traditional crown may require a putty dental impression to form the foundational blueprint for its creation and are usually sent to an outside dental laboratory to be manufactured. CEREC® same-day crowns can achieve virtually the same results as traditional crowns but at a much faster rate. With CEREC® technology, the entire process can be expedited because the crowns are made right here in the office. The dental impression, the creation of the permanent crown, and placement of the crown on the tooth can be done in a single appointment. With CEREC®, the impression is created digitally — no messy putties are necessary — which makes this part of the process much quicker and more comfortable.

Coping with emotions: Kim Reichig – Scarsdale

With the start of school, the upcoming holidays, and a busy schedule, I’m feeling more anxious, down, and overwhelmed. What can I do when I find myself feeling this way?

When you notice you’re feeling this way, try some of these steps:

  • Acknowledge uncomfortable feelings and label the emotions without judgement. Negative feelings are valid and alert us that something is wrong. Journaling about your feelings can help bring clarity and reduce anxiety.

  • Cultivate self-compassion – think about how you would respond to a friend having these feelings.
  • Do something that makes you feel accomplished or proud. For example, work on that task you have been putting off for ten minutes, give a friend a compliment, clean out that junk drawer, or go for a walk around the block.
  • Practice daily gratitude to highlight positive experiences and the ways in which you’re helping yourself. Ask yourself “What are three things that I am grateful for or proud of?”

If your negative emotions persist, consider seeing a therapist to help you learn new coping skills to navigate these feelings.

Treating gynecologic conditions: Symphony Medical

What is your approach and background in treating gynecologic conditions?

As a board-certified gynecologist and fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, I have a passion for education and empowering my patients about their health. I treat every patient they way I would want to be treated myself and I make sure to take time to really listen. Although my experience includes all gynecologic conditions, I have a special interest in menopause, contraception, treatment for abnormal Pap tests, vulvar disease, pelvic pain, abnormal vaginal bleeding, and PCOS. I fell in love with the field of OB/GYN after receiving my medical degree at SUNY Upstate Medical University. I’m also honored to have been the first fellow in minimally invasive/robotic gynecologic surgery and to have received the “Humanism in Medicine Award,” and named a “Super Doctors Rising Star” by the New York Times and a “Top Doc” by New York Top Docs.

Understanding the real science behind healthy, long-lasting eyebrows: VERVE Medical Cosmetics

What’s the secret for keeping your eyebrows as healthy and full as they are when you’re in your 20s?

Stop plucking, waxing, and threading them! Instead, trim or shave your eyebrows without pulling out the roots. The most common reason eyebrows thin out over time is due to years of plucking, waxing, and threading. Damage occurs each time brow hairs are pulled and extracted from the root (follicle). As a result, hair grows back thinner, slower, and weaker, until ultimately, the hair stops growing. Brow loss may also be caused by hormonal changes such as menopause and thyroid conditions. If you are considering non-surgical brow treatment, Botox is the most common for shaping by temporarily affecting the muscles around the eyebrows and changing the muscular pull. Cosmetic fillers may also aid in eyebrow shaping by adding back support underneath the skin, lifting the brows to a more rested appearance. For optimal brow shape, many clients benefit from a combination of Botox and fillers. Schedule your free consultation with Verve’s Medical Director, Dr. Stephen Bracci, who will help you determine if non-surgical fillers are right for you.

Determining when children are too sick for school: White Plains Hospital Physician Associates

How do I know if my child is too sick for school?

A fever (100.4 degrees or higher) indicates that your child is fighting a viral or bacterial infection and should stay home and rest. Your child should be fever-free for at least 24 hours before returning to school, but the absence of a fever does not mean your child is not still contagious. A very runny nose, a persistent and productive cough, diarrhea, stomach pain or vomiting are all signs your child should stay home. After a digestive illness, a good rule of thumb on returning to school is whether your child can eat a meal, such as dinner the night before, with no symptoms.

How do I know if my sick child should see their pediatrician?

Your child should be seen if they have a fever above 102 degrees, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, decreased appetite and/or fever for more than 24 hours. While the first day of a mild fever in older children may be too early to detect illnesses like strep throat or an ear infection, it is always best to err on the safe side and consult with their pediatrician. For babies under one year old, it’s always a good idea to bring them in, as their immune system is less developed and they don’t yet have the protection of childhood immunizations. Babies can become more severely ill quickly. If your baby has a fever, isn’t drinking enough, or is struggling to breathe, call their pediatrician immediately.

How can I keep the rest of my family healthy when my child is sick?

Good hand hygiene and sneezing into the elbow are important for everyone in the home when one family member is sick. Disinfect high-touch surfaces, especially in the bathroom. Have children bathe and brush their teeth separately, and avoid sharing drinkware and other personal items, such as hand towels. In addition, make sure each child is up-to-date on their flu shot and other vaccinations. I especially recommend flu shots for children with asthma, and babies six months and older who attend daycare or have older siblings attending school.
