Staying smart about summer workouts: HSS Westchester

Q. When is the best time to exercise?
A. We all want to get outside and exercise in summer. But heat and humidity can take their toll on even the best-conditioned athletes. It’s important to make your summer runs, bike rides, and outdoor pursuits safe and productive. Avoid summer exercise from 10 am to 4 pm when heat and humidity are most oppressive. If lunch hour is your only option, look for shade where it’s cooler. Stay hydrated throughout the week, not just before or after exercising. If you start a workout dehydrated, your body can’t catch up. Common signs of dehydration are dizziness, nausea, and headaches.

Q. How can I avoid overuse injuries?
A. Early warning signs of overuse injuries in your foot or ankle, for example, might include tightness, soreness, swelling, limited mobility, or intense pain. Start slowly at the beginning of the summer or if trying a new sport. This will help your body get used to the heat and the new activity. Steer clear of jumping in too fast, like playing two hours of tennis to start the season. Dynamic stretching and joint mobility exercises prior to and after activity will help avoid injury.

Q. What’s the value of strength training?
A. Strength training can improve your other workouts and reduce injuries. Muscle imbalances are often a cause of overuse injuries. Try resistance bands for the upper body, body weight squats and lunges, and core strengthening. The focus is to strengthen major muscle groups like the shoulders, quads, glutes, and hamstrings.

Effectively treating elbow pain: VT2 – Vitale Therapy & Training

Q. How can I get rid of my elbow pain? Is it “Tennis Elbow” even if I don’t play tennis?
A. One of the more common injuries I see in active adults is lateral elbow pain, commonly referred to as “Tennis Elbow.” You don’t have to play tennis to get lateral epicondylitis. Activities such as weightlifting, gardening, and carpentry can also lead to lateral elbow pain. The first thing you want to do when you notice some pain is to modify the activities that trigger your pain. Treatment for lateral epicondylitis can include physical therapy, self-massage, strengthening and stretching, and icing. Keeping eyes safe in the sun: White Plains Hospital Physician Associates

Q. What type of sunglasses are most effective?
A. The sun’s UV rays not only cause glare, but can be a serious threat to our eyes and the delicate skin around them. Most sunglasses, including prescription glasses, have UV protection embedded in the lens rather than coated over it. The best way to find out if sunglasses have UV protection is to look for a label, specifically one that says UV 400. These block at least 99% of UV rays and 75-90% of visible light. Additionally, sunglasses with larger lenses or wraparound-style frames will provide better protection against UV rays reaching your eyes from all angles.

Q. Are dark lenses better for your eyes?
A. A misconception about sunglasses is the darker the lens, the better protection against the sun. Lens color and tint actually have nothing to do with protection against UV rays. Sunglasses with dark lenses that do not offer adequate UV protection can be quite harmful, because the dark tint causes the pupils to dilate, letting more harmful light into the eyes.

Q. Do sunglasses ever wear out?
A. Most cheaper brands or sunglasses which are usually only coated with UV eventually lose their UV protection, whereas prescription sunglasses in which the UV film is embedded in the lens do not. The typical expiration of a pair of sunglasses is two years to three years when the coating on the lens gets damaged and it’s no longer effective. We all want to look good in our sunglasses, but the main objective should be finding a pair that are stylish and safe to wear.
