Addressing gaps between teeth and more with smile makeover: Advanced Dentistry of Westchester
Q. When I see myself on Zoom, I notice that my teeth have become worn and old-looking. How can I bring back my youthful smile?
A. Zoom get-togethers can make you feel self-conscious about every imperfection. If you are concerned about worn and discolored teeth, gaps, and chipped teeth, a smile makeover not only addresses all of these issues, but can make you look 15 years younger. Using a range of techniques from bleaching to porcelain veneers, we create beautiful and natural-looking smiles. Before any work is done, a photograph is taken and revised to reveal how your new smile will look. Once you love the look of trial veneers, the porcelain veneers are created, and you leave with the smile you’ve always wanted. We also share our approach to esthetics with other dentists through the classes we teach and our articles and chapters on cosmetic dentistry.

Understanding the benefits of Invisalign aligners: The Center for Cosmetic Dentistry
Q. Why should I consider orthodontic treatment with Invisalign and how do I determine if it’s the right treatment for me?
A. Crowded, uneven, and misaligned teeth can cause discomfort, even self-esteem issues as well as functional concerns. Invisalign offers the convenience of removable aligners that are clear. Another benefit, it may be a shorter treatment than with traditional metal braces. We offer free consultations for Invisalign. During this appointment with Dr. Robert Rioseco, if you decide to proceed, we can take your records during that first consultation and get you started immediately. Our office staff can also find out from your insurance if you have coverage for orthodontics, although you can contact your insurance company or your Human Resources department directly. Many companies do have some benefits you can use towards Invisalign treatment.

Keeping skin healthy and hydrated during the heat of summer: Farida Studio
Q. What are the top skincare tips for the hot summer months?
A. Wearing sunscreen is the obvious number one! We recommend SPF 30 or higher. Ideally you should apply it 30 minutes before sun exposure, and you must reapply at least every two hours and after every swim. Take cool showers and apply a highly moisturizing body lotion and face moisturizer afterwords. UV radiation is famous for damaging and aging your skin. Antioxidants in your diet and skincare come to the rescue. Vitamin C rich serums and peptides are very helpful. Once a week, revitalizing masks are great tools to bring extra moisture and enhance skin elasticity. Follow these tips and enjoy a worry-free summer!

Elevating salon services to a holistic experience: Hair Saloon Café
Q. What makes your salon stand out from others in Westchester?
A. Located in the beautiful village of Scarsdale, just outside of New York City, lies a haven of health and wellness recognized as the Best of Westchester by Westchester Magazine every year since 2021. This sanctuary of beauty has again been awarded the Best Salon 2024, along with Best Colorist of 2024 and the Best Hair Extension Specialist of 2024. But the experience at the salon goes beyond enhancing your physical appearance. It fosters a sense of community and promotes overall well-being. Guests are invited to socialize over craft coffee, cocktails, and bites at the social bar upfront, creating an atmosphere of hospitality and camaraderie. This unique approach encourages guests to come for the haircut, but stay for the cocktails, making each visit a holistic experience of luxury, relaxation, and social connection. This is more than just a salon; it’s a destination for health and wellness.

Preventing pickleball injuries: Mount Sinai Orthopedics – Scarsdale
Q. I love playing pickleball, but I want to play safely. Are there ways to avoid possible injuries?
A. So many of my patients, regardless of age, are playing pickleball! Scientific data suggests that these patients report a decrease in self-reported pain, improved cognitive performance, and improved physical health. With all these great opportunities for sports and exercise, however, we are seeing more injuries. Fortunately, most of the injuries tend to be sprains (injuries to the ligaments around a joint) and strains (injury to a muscle or tendon). Sudden changes of direction that are often required during pickleball can lead to such injuries. So, what can you do to prevent these injuries?
1. Dynamic stretching before playing is important to decrease stiffness and warm up your muscles. Wrist/ankle/arm circles, a slow jog (forward and backwards), lunges, butt kickers, and high knees are all good ways to stretch before playing.
2. Static stretching after playing to increase the flexibility of the muscles. Quadriceps, hamstring, Achilles tendon, and shoulder stretches are the most important. Hold the stretch for at least 30 seconds to lengthen those muscles/tendons and do each stretch two or three times.
3. Hydrate before, during, and after you play. While water is an obvious necessity, don’t forget those electrolytes. Most of us know about bananas, but squeezing a whole lemon in your water bottle can be really good for you too! Coconut water is also a good option and for an electrolyte-filled snack, consider watermelon or yogurt.
4. Wear court shoes to allow for lateral movement and prevent tripping when moving side to side.
5. When first starting out, if a ball soars over your head run forward to reach the ball and then turn around and hit it. As you get more experienced you can run backwards.
6. If a ball rolls on your court, call “Ball!” Stop play and take the point over.

Understanding cosmetic dentistry and available procedures: ProHEALTH Dental an Affiliate of Northwell Health
Q. What exactly is cosmetic dentistry and what cosmetic dental services are most common?
A. Cosmetic dentistry focuses on improving the appearance and aesthetics of your smile and can be an option if you have: chipped or cracked teeth, small gaps between your teeth, tooth discoloration, misshapen teeth, and misaligned teeth. Common procedures include teeth whitening, dental bonding, veneers, and porcelain crowns. Teeth whitening is often offered both in-office and at home to address teeth that have become stained over time from dark-colored foods and drinks. Dental bonding is used to conceal and cover cracks, discoloration, and other cosmetic imperfections and usually needs replacing every five to seven years. Lastly, many types of veneers and porcelain crowns are available to conceal a wide range of cosmetic flaws, but typically require some removal of natural enamel. ProHEALTH Dental and Northwell Health recently announced a strategic agreement to provide oral health services across Westchester, Long Island, and New York City, underscoring the integral link between oral health and overall well-being.

Keeping children healthy during the summer: White Plains Hospital
Q. What kind of sun protection is best for young children?
A. To best protect young children, look for clothing with Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) 50 or above, which blocks 98% of UV rays. Opt for a mineral-based sunblock, which physically blocks the sun’s rays from the skin, with an SPF of 30 or higher and active ingredients such as Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide, which block both UVA and UVB rays. Check your specific sunscreen for instructions on re-application, but as a general rule, aim for re-application every 1-2 hours or sooner if swimming or sweating. For infants under six months, keep sun exposure to a minimum and protect their skin with sun protective clothing rather than sunscreen. Last, don’t forget a hat! Sunburns can definitely happen on the scalp, and a wide-brimmed hat is a great way to protect both scalp and face.

Q. What are some healthy, kid-friendly snack options to pack for summer outings?
A. Keep kids well-fed and happy during family outings by packing a few nutritious snacks. For a sweet, refreshing treat, try fresh fruit (watermelon, cantaloupe, berries or frozen grapes), which is a good source of fiber and will help to keep kids hydrated. Pair the fruit with a cheese stick or nuts for some protein, which will help keep kids full longer. Satisfy their cravings for salty or crunchy foods with nuts, popcorn, harvest snap dried peas, dried edamame or dried chickpeas, which are great sources of fiber and available in individual snack packs that are great for travel.

Q. My child was recently diagnosed with asthma. What precautious should we take to enjoy the outdoors safely?
A. During the dog days of summer, the high heat, allergens, and environmental irritants can trigger asthma attacks and make it harder for children with asthma to breathe. Avoid extended periods outdoors during the hottest part of the day (between 10 am and 4 pm), seek air-conditioned and/or shaded spots frequently, and stick with indoor activities on days when there is a high pollen count or poor air quality. Smoke from a barbecue, fireworks, or campfires can trigger an asthma attack, so ensure that your child keeps a safe distance, and have their quick relief inhaler on hand in case symptoms arise.
