Getting a good night sleep: Advanced Dentistry of Westchester

Q. My spouse says I snore and neither of us gets a good night sleep. Can I do something easily to help?
A. YES! Advanced Dentistry of Westchester is now offering Solea Sleep, a new laser therapy that provides rapid relief from snoring using ultra-low laser energy to tighten and stiffen the collagen in the soft palate, reducing vibrations that cause people to snore. This simple, non-surgical, non-oral appliance procedure provides relief for a year or longer, takes only 15 minutes to perform, and allows patients to return to their normal routine immediately after the office visit with no discomfort. We are also offering a 15% discount on the Solea Sleep therapy throughout the month of May.

Reaping the benefits of good nutrition: Angela Rein Nutrition

Q. How can busy parents use nutrition to prepare their family for a post-pandemic summer?
A. The stress of the past year has wreaked havoc on our gut, skin, body, and mental well-being. Simple nutritional adjustments can make a big impact: 1. Eat whole, non-processed foods. 2. Consume 3 to 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day (Tip: Green Smoothies are an easy way to get several servings and kids love them!). 3. Stay hydrated (Tip: Add citrus fruit to your water for refreshing, natural flavor). As our kids adjust to full-time activities, support them with “comfort food.” Pack a ‘piece-of-home’ in their lunch by incorporating a snack they often enjoyed this past year.

Exploring the newest cellulite treatments: The Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic & Laser Surgery

Q. Are there any new cellulite treatments on the market?
A. At The Center for Dermatology, we are pleased to offer Qwo, the first and only FDA-approved injectable used to treat cellulite. Patients receive 3 treatments spaced 3 weeks apart and the injections take as little as 10 minutes. Visible results are seen in 10 weeks. Looking your summer best with an improved smile: Delia Dentistry

Q. As we look forward to summer 2021, how do you recommend your patients prepare for summer?
A. As part of my comprehensive patient management and support of my patients’ dental and overall health, I recommend that everyone schedule a thorough dental health check-up, especially those who have delayed their dentist visits due to the pandemic. It is essential to return to normal health and dental care routines. Those who have put off their regular check-ups may find that their dental conditions have worsened over the past year due to a delay in treatment. It is important that people understand that dentists are their first line of defense in detecting oral cancer and other dental issues that can impact a person’s overall health and well-being. That said, summer is a time when everyone wants to look their best, particularly as we reemerge into more normal conditions. When a patient feels that their smile could be brighter or straighter, we can discuss different options for achieving these goals, from simple take-home whitening to clear aligners.

Understanding and treating Melasma: EurOwyn Beauty

Q. What is Melasma?
A. Melasma is a common pigmentation disorder that causes brown or gray patches to appear on the skin, primarily on the face, but can also appear on other parts of the body when exposed to excessive sun, such as your forearms on your neck. Potential triggers for melasma includes changes in hormones during pregnancy (choloasma), hormone treatments, taking birth control pills, stress, sun exposure, certain skin care products, medications and even certain food can cause hyperpigmentation. Genetics also plays a component in Melasma. Although some skincare products can treat Melasma, it only focuses on the outer layer of the skin serving as more of a band aid rather than an actual therapy. Aerolase™ laser treatments can target the pigment in the dermal level of the skin and breakdown the vascular component of the melasma in the skin to further control it. Protecting your eye health: Eyes on Hudson

Q. What is the best way to protect your eye health this summer?
A. A lifetime of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light can lead to serious eye health concerns like cataracts and macular degeneration.“The best way to protect your eyes from UV light this summer is to wear sunglasses” says Dr. Katelyn Rogerson of Eyes on Hudson in Dobbs Ferry. “However, not all sunglasses are equally effective. With your sight at stake, quality matters.” The majority of prescriptions can be made into sunglasses, including prescriptions with progressive lenses. Lighter prescriptions will have a range of tint colors to choose from, but heavier prescriptions can only be made from polarized lenses (tinting dyes don’t stick to thin lenses used for high prescriptions). If you really want the best sunglasses experience, make sure to opt for back-surface anti-reflective coating. The elimination of reflections from the inner surface of your sunglasses will provide effortless comfort and clarity outdoors. Enjoy the summer sun, safely!

Benefitting from body scrub and massage treatments: Oasis Day Spa

Q. What are the benefits of getting treatments like body scrubs or massages?
A. An exfoliating body scrub is the perfect year-round treatment to soften dry or rough skin. Body scrubs promote circulation and cell renewal while drawing out impurities. These treatments work wonders to smooth and refresh the skin, leaving it primed for optimal hydration once moisturizers are applied. At Oasis Day Spa, we pair our body scrubs with hydrotherapy for an all-in-one skin treatment and relaxing sensory journey. Massages have many therapeutic benefits to your health. They promote relaxation and decrease stress. Massages also help to loosen the knots in your muscles while promoting healthy blood flow throughout the body. Swedish massages utilize long, gentle, kneading strokes and are usually performed with light to medium pressure, while deep tissue massages generally focus on the deeper lying muscle tissue and use different techniques such as trigger point therapy.

Importance of annual eye exams: Omni Vision Eye Care

Q. My vision is good. Why do I need an annual eye exam?
A. A comprehensive eye exam doesn’t ONLY check to see if you need spectacles, but also detects eye disease. Most ocular conditions, including glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy are absolutely painless. They are normally not noticed by the patient until these diseases affect their vision.  By then, some of the damage may not be reversible. The earlier these diseases are diagnosed, the better the outcome for the patient’s visual acuity. This also applies to children. If certain childhood conditions are not detected and treated by the age of six, a child’s vision may be affected for the rest of their lives.

Considering the benefits of dental implants: Precision Arts Dental Associates, PC

Q. What are the advantages of using minimally invasive techniques to insert dental implants?
A. In addition, the ability to use minimally invasive techniques for procedures that once required a surgical approach has helped reduce patients¹ fears and their reluctance to undergo certain treatments. We use advanced technology and a minimally invasive implant protocol that allows for rapid healing with little or no discomfort, bleeding, or swelling and with a high success rate. By locating implants with a computer model first, we can fabricate a temporary fixed bridge before you¹re ever touched by surgery. To set your mind at ease, we recommend that you come in for an informative, no-fee consultation. We also treat sleep apnea, snoring, and airway disorders with the latest technical advances. To keep patients safe during the COVID pandemic, our offices are fogged with Hypochlorous acid between patients to sterilize all surfaces and filtered with ultrafine, virus eliminating equipment. Hypochlorous acid destroys viruses and bacteria 70 times more effectively than household bleach.

Avoiding golf injuries: Orthopaedic & Neurosurgery Specialists

Q. How can golfers avoid an early-season injury?
A. Before heading to the course, golfers should stretch or exercise at home and fight the urge to rush or bounce through their stretches. Hold each stretch for 15 to 20 seconds at a comfortable position. At the course, do a quick stretch while holding the club before lining up at the first tee then be sure to stretch from time to time during your game. Walk the course, or if you are using a cart, find opportunities to walk to keep muscles loose and increase circulation. Use ice afterwards on sore muscles or on shoulder, knee and elbow joints if you’re feeling any soreness.

Preparing for a post-COVID smile: Smile Style NY

Q. How can I fix my teeth to have a more attractive smile once we emerge from our COVID masks?
A. As an orthodontist, the most common treatments I use to “fix” teeth are Invisalign or traditional braces. Invisalign involves a series of clear, plastic trays/aligners, which are worn sequentially 20 to 22 hours/day for a one- to two-week period. The timing of wear for each tray is determined by level of patient compliance, lifestyle, and again, compliance. Trays are removed when eating and drinking any liquid besides water. Traditional braces, metal or clear/ceramic, are bonded to the patient’s teeth and interact with a series of metal wires to move the teeth. Ceramic or “clear” braces are esthetic options for this type of treatment. Preventing spring sports injuries: Symmetry Physical Therapy

Q. How can I best avoid injuries during the spring sports season?
A. Most injuries that occur during the early part of the season are due to overuse. Many athletes’ bodies are not used to the activity required after a period of time off and the early season volume can be too much. 1. Listen to your body: If you are feeling abnormal pain outside or normal muscle soreness, seek help from a professional early. Waiting to get help can cost you valuable time if the problem gets worse 2. Warming up is key: a structured dynamic warm-up is vital before activity to get your muscles ready to go. 3. Recover properly after activity: take time to stretch, foam roll, and recover after activity to avoid over training and common overuse injuries. If you need help with an injury or general guidance about proper warming up and recovery methods, call us to set up an appointment in one of our three conveniently located Westchester facilities.

Recognizing the need for a smile makeover: Westchester Dental Design

Q. What are the signs it is time to consult a dentist for a smile makeover?
A. A smile makeover, known as a full-mouth rehabilitation, is a form of cosmetic dentistry that restores the architecture of the mouth to its maximum potential for esthetics and after years of wear and tear. This can include the need for one or a combination of dental implants, veneers, and/or crowns. Some common signs of needing this type of cosmetic dentistry include broken/chipped teeth, fillings, crowns, or veneers; missing teeth; sores at the corners of your mouth or lips; shortened length of the face (a scrunched-up or collapsed appearance); difficulty eating; or TMJ (jaw joint) disorders. A digital mock-up showing how the final work will look allows you to see and approve the design without altering your teeth and a “Trial Smile” is placed on your teeth to test the design. If needed, a low-dose 3D X-ray (cone-beam CT scan) is used to plan the careful placement of any implants. You are able to approve the final restorative plan before any care begins. Following this sequence assures a carefully planned transformation from start to finish.

Staying safe in the sun: White Plains Hospital Physician Associates

Q. How can I better protect my skin from the sun?
A. There are two types of UV radiation – UVA and UVB – and both can be harmful to your skin. UVA light causes wrinkles, while UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn and can damage your skin cells, which can be a precursor to skin cancer. Regular use of sunscreen at least 30 SPF or higher can reduce the amount of UVA and UVB rays that damage your skin. To help keep our community healthy and safe from the sun, White Plains Hospital has installed touchless sunscreen dispensers at pools and parks across the city.

Q. How much sunscreen should I use?
A. One of the biggest sunscreen mistakes people make is skimping on application. Make sure to use a quarter size dollop on each body part, including your arms, legs, face, the tops of your ears and even the soles of your feet. Any skin surface can develop skin cancer, which is why dermatologists recommend annual skin cancer screenings. And don’t forget to reapply sunscreen regularly, at least every two hours.

Q. Are people of color at more of a risk for skin cancer?
A. There’s a misconception that if you have a darker skin color, you don’t need to wear sunscreen or protect yourself from the sun. While the natural melanin, or pigment, in darker skin offers some protection, it’s not enough on its own for long periods of time. Squamous cell carcinoma, accounts for 20% of all skin cancers and about 75% of all deaths due to skin cancer. It is also the most common type of skin cancer in African Americans and Indians, and the second most common type in Hispanics, Asians and Caucasians, so it is incredibly important to wear sunscreen!
