Understanding the benefits of Invisalign aligners: The Center for Cosmetic Dentistry

Why should I consider orthodontic treatment with Invisalign and how do I determine if it’s the right treatment for me?

Crowded, uneven, and misaligned teeth can cause discomfort, even self-esteem issues as well as functional concerns. Invisalign offers the convenience of removable aligners that are clear. Another benefit might be a shorter treatment than with traditional metal braces. We offer free consultations for Invisalign. During this appointment with Dr. Rioseco, if you decide to proceed, we can take your records during that first consultation and get you started immediately. Our office staff can also find out from your insurance if you have coverage for orthodontics., although you can contact your insurance company or your HR department directly. Many companies do have some benefits you can use towards Invisalign treatment.

Getting back into shape without injury: Mount Sinai, Scarsdale

My New Year’s resolution is to get back in shape but every time I get started, I feel like I hurt my shoulder or other parts of my body. How can I avoid this?

There’s no question exercise provides numerous benefits. But suffering a setback after being highly motivated can feel like you’ve lost all the ground you gained. Follow these few simple tips to keep your progress moving forward and avoid bumps in the road:

Take time to warm up your body before starting your workout. Avoid early strains with a 10-15-minute warm-up. Gentle stretching helps warm the joints and increase flexibility and doing reps with lighter weights loosens your body.

Slowly raise the intensity of your workouts over time and stay within your comfort level. Long-term improvement and maintenance is the key to reaching your fitness goals!

Pay attention to pain, your best guide for knowing when to stop a particular exercise. If needed, a good trainer can help modify your workout to keep you on track and safe.

Finally, if injuries do occur, our Mount Sinai Orthopedics Group in Scarsdale has specialists in every area of orthopedics and are ready to help!

Finding relief when depression treatments don’t work: NY Ketamine Infusions

What is Ketamine and how does it help with depression?

Ketamine is a safe, effective anesthetic that has been in use worldwide since 1970 and has been listed on the World Health Organization’s Essential Medicines list since 1985. Multiple studies and trials run at Mount Sinai in NYU, Yale, and other prestigious universities and hospitals since 1990 have shown that ketamine is exceptionally effective in treating treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, anxiety, and other related mood disorders. Unlike standard antidepressants like SSRIs and SNRIs, which generally take four to eight weeks to work (if they work at all), ketamine is fast-acting and can sometimes show immediate efficacy. Because of its fast-acting nature, ketamine can be an extremely important tool in preventing suicide and immediately alleviating the suffering caused by major depressive disorder (MDD). At NY Ketamine Infusions, we have more clinical experience than any other ketamine center in the world and are proud to report that 84% of our patients experienced noteworthy or significant improvement in their symptoms. Taking a proactive approach in the new year: White Plains Hospital

How can I stick to my New Year’s resolution to be healthier?

Quality sleep, ample exercise, proper nutrition, and avoiding risky substances are all important for good health, but many people take a “do or die” approach to healthy living in the new year, which isn’t sustainable. What worked for a friend or family member, who might have a different body type and their own unique situation in terms of medical conditions, hormones, or stage of life, may not be right for you. Working with somebody who can help you determine a personalized plan of action is essential, so that you can incorporate healthy habits into your life for good.

Dr. Nicole Solomos is a sports medicine and lifestyle medicine physician at White Plains Hospital Physician Associates. For an appointment, call 914.631.7777 (Hawthorne), 914.375.7777 (Yonkers), or 914.849.7075 (Somers).

I’m thinking about starting a family in the new year. How can I ensure a healthy pregnancy?

One of the best things you can do before pregnancy is to reach a healthy body weight. About one in 10 women develop diabetes during pregnancy, or gestational diabetes. Risk factors include being over age 25, being overweight, a family history of type 2 diabetes and certain ethnic backgrounds. While blood sugar levels typically return to normal after delivery, some women go on to develop type 2 diabetes later in life. I recommend following the MyPlate model (myplate.gov), where half of your meal consists of fruits and vegetables, and 30 minutes a day of exercise, even if it’s just walking, to reduce your risk.

Dr. Gayotri Goswami is an endocrinologist at White Plains Hospital Physician Associates in Larchmont. To make an appointment, call 914.849.7400.

How can I encourage my children to spend less time on their phones in the new year?

Modeling the behavior you want to see will help build healthier habits for the whole family. Try a new family rule, such as going phone-free at mealtimes. Focus on spending time together without screens, such as by playing a board or card game that everyone can enjoy. Another good idea for parents and children alike is to shut the phone off at least one hour before bedtime to reduce your exposure to blue light, which reduces the body’s release of melatonin and can disrupt sleep. Your pediatrician can also be a great partner in helping you strategize how to approach this issue with your children.

Dr. Debra Etelson is a pediatrician at White Plains Hospital Physician Associates in Somers. To make an appointment, call 914.849.7075.
