Treating sensitive skin with glowing results: Botanic Face & Body Spa

Q. I have sensitive skin — how will an organic facial help me?

A. Botanic Face & Body Spa specializes in sensitive skincare. That’s why we have curated premium organic skincare lines to offer in our treatment room as well as our retail boutique. Theresa Naman, founder of the spa, has sensitive skin herself and always disliked getting a facial and leaving with a red face. Theresa has designed facials to treat delicate skin with glowing results. Organic skincare is beneficial for all skin types, especially sensitive skin, because there are no toxic chemicals to cause irritations. Plant-based formulas deliver nourishment and antioxidants to the skin and protect the skin’s natural barrier. Our facials do not compromise the skin, but rather aid in balancing its natural beauty.

Understanding the benefits of Invisalign aligners: The Center for Cosmetic Dentistry

Q. Why should I consider orthodontic treatment with Invisalign and how do I determine if it’s the right treatment for me?

A.Crowded, uneven, and misaligned teeth can cause discomfort, even self-esteem issues as well as functional concerns. Invisalign offers the convenience of removable aligners that are clear. Another benefit, it may be a shorter treatment than with traditional metal braces. We offer free consultations for Invisalign. During this appointment with Dr. Robert Rioseco, if you decide to proceed, we can take your records during that first consultation and get you started immediately. Our office staff can also find out from your insurance if you have coverage for orthodontics, although you can contact your insurance company or your Human Resources department directly. Many companies do have some benefits you can use towards Invisalign treatment.

Preventing pickleball injuries: Mount Sinai Orthopedics – Scarsdale

Q. I love playing pickleball, but I want to play safely. Are there ways to avoid possible injuries?

A.  So many of my patients, regardless of age, are playing pickleball! Scientific data suggests that these patients report a decrease in self-reported pain, improved cognitive performance, and improved physical health. With all these great opportunities for sports and exercise, however, we are seeing more injuries. Fortunately, most of the injuries tend to be sprains (injuries to the ligaments around a joint) and strains (injury to a muscle or tendon). Sudden changes of direction that are often required during pickleball can lead to such injuries. So, what can you do to prevent these injuries?

  1. Dynamic stretching before playing is important to decrease stiffness and warm up your muscles. Wrist/ankle/arm circles, a slow jog (forward and backwards), lunges, butt kickers, and high knees are all good ways to stretch before playing.
  2. Static stretching after playing to increase the flexibility of the muscles. Quadriceps, hamstring, Achilles tendon, and shoulder stretches are the most important. Hold the stretch for at least 30 seconds to lengthen those muscles/tendons and do each stretch two or three times.
  3. Hydrate before, during, and after you play. While water is an obvious necessity, don’t forget those electrolytes. Most of us know about bananas, but squeezing a whole lemon in your water bottle can be really good for you too! Coconut water is also a good option and for an electrolyte-filled snack, consider watermelon or yogurt.
  4. Wear court shoes to allow for lateral movement and prevent tripping when moving side to side.
  5. When first starting out, if a ball soars over your head run forward to reach the ball and then turn around and hit it. As you get more experienced you can run backwards.
  6. If a ball rolls on your court, call “Ball!” Stop play and take the point over.

Maintaining periodontal health and overall well-being: ProHEALTH Dental an Affiliate of Northwell Health

Q. How do clear aligners contribute to better oral hygiene and overall health?

A. Proper teeth alignment is not just about enhancing your smile — it’s essential for maintaining periodontal health and overall well-being. According to the CDC, about 4 in 10 U.S. adults aged 30 years or older have a mild, moderate, or severe level of periodontitis. Misaligned teeth can create hard-to-clean areas in your mouth, which increases the risk of plaque buildup and gum disease. Over time, poor oral hygiene can lead to more serious health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory issues, given the close connection between oral health and overall health. Clear aligners offer a discreet and effective way to straighten your teeth and improve periodontal health. By gradually moving teeth into their correct positions, clear aligners help reduce crowding and overlapping, making it easier to clean between teeth and along the gum line. This minimizes the risk of developing periodontitis and supports a healthier mouth. Choosing clear aligners is not only an investment in a more confident smile but also a proactive step toward protecting your overall health by promoting optimal oral hygiene.

Achieving your health goals with the help of bariatric surgery: White Plains Hospital

Q. How do I know if bariatric surgery is right for me?

A. Bariatric surgery can be a life-changing tool for patients who were unsuccessful with traditional weight-loss methods to achieve better health. Some people may be led to believe that bariatric surgery is a magic pill for obesity. While patients do lose a significant amount of weight right after surgery, long-term success requires discipline and continued commitment to lifestyle modifications.

Candidates must have a mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher, or a BMI of 35 or higher accompanied by at least one health condition in connection with obesity, such as high blood pressure or diabetes.

Q. What support is available for patients throughout their care?

A. Patients in our practice begin their journey by meeting with a member of our surgical team for an initial consultation. We will review the patient’s history and go over options for weight loss, and whether the patient would be a candidate for surgery. Preparation for surgery can take around six months. We will connect patients to a variety of specialists, including a clinical dietitian, pulmonologist, gastroenterologist, and psychologist to ensure they are prepared for the process and know exactly what to expect every step of the way.

White Plains Hospital’s program is accredited as a Comprehensive Center under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), which ensures that patients receive a multidisciplinary program — not just a single surgical procedure — to give them the best possible outcome. This includes following up with our patients over the course of their lives to get ahead of any issues that may arise.

Q. Can you describe the surgical and recovery process?

A. We primarily offer two minimally invasive procedures: the sleeve gastrectomy, where a portion of the stomach is removed, thus restricting the volume of food intake; and the gastric bypass, where the stomach is split into two parts and rerouted to the small intestines, leading to volume restriction and decreased absorption. Patients can go home as early as the next day. Following surgery, patients follow a liquid diet and customized exercise plan as food is reintroduced slowly and in smaller portions over several weeks. Weight loss typically begins quickly after the procedure, and patients begin to experience the many associated health benefits.
