Q. What makes your practice stand out from other periodontal practices?
A. Now in the fifth decade of practice, I have had the wonderful opportunity of observing for over 40 years the successful treatment for thousands of patients. My direct observations have also been augmented by fellow professionals who spent their careers learning how to save natural teeth and prevent the recurrence of periodontal disease. The single most important aspect of our dental practice is the commitment to prevention, a mantra that continues to inspire me and my team.
Q. Is tooth loss preventable?
A. Loss of teeth due to dental decay or periodontal disease is by and large preventable. Although dental implants have provided an effective way to replace missing teeth, the oral cavity can be destructive to both teeth and implants. All dental treatment can fail with a lack of emphasis and commitment to prevention. Everything we do begins with education.
Q. In what ways do you take advantage of advanced technology?
A. While we employ cutting-edge technology ranging from a perioscope, which is used to detect tartar and bacteria under the gum non-surgically effecting its removal and reversing the periodontal disease, to 3D technology, which enables us to place implants accurately and safely, our practice still focuses on the education of our patients. The newest technology aligned with experience, judgment, and compassion enables us to provide our patients with state-of-the-art treatment combined with personalized, compassionate care.
Q. When should implants be considered and what are the benefits?
A. When tooth loss is inevitable or patients present with missing teeth, our well-trained staff is able to provide the highest level of implant technology available. Whether replacing a single tooth or a mouthful of missing teeth, implant dentistry has given patients a second opportunity to enjoy a third set of healthy, aesthetic, functioning teeth. For chronic conditions such as periodontal disease, the daily effective removal of the accumulation of bacteria is critical, in the same way that diet, even with medication, is critical in managing diabetes. A multitude of time-tested treatment returns the oral cavity to a state of health and we strive to keep it that way permanently.
Q. How do you help patients who may be especially anxious?
A. Dentistry can be a frightening experience for many individuals, some of whom have avoided dentistry all of their lives. We never lose sight of the fact that patients bring a great deal of anxiety and fear to dentistry. Our staff and I focus on making any treatment we provide painless and humane, as well as extremely effective. We provide safe effective sedation for patients anxious about dental care.
Q. Has the use of implants to replace missing teeth changed in any way?
A.The concept of “Doctor, save my teeth” has expanded into “Doctor save my implant.” Our first implant placed in 1988 is still functioning. However, we have learned as others have, that implants are not impervious to the onslaught of bacteria. Therefore, once placed, an implant needs to be maintained and evaluated and the patient educated so that it becomes a lifetime experience rather than a temporary one.
