Caring For Your Heart Close to Home: NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital’s Interventional Cardiology Program

Its state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization lab provides advanced cardiac care to the community.

Your heart is one of the hardest-working organs in the body — pumping 2,000 gallons of blood a day to circulate nutrients and oxygen — so it’s no secret that taking care of your heart is critical to your overall health. While maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a big part of heart health, many people need a little extra care. According to the American Heart Association, nearly half of the adults in the United States have some form of cardiovascular disease, a leading cause of death in this country.

Given the need for high-quality cardiology care, NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital wanted to provide easy access to the best cardiology doctors and most advanced technology close to home. This spring, the hospital launched an interventional cardiology program and opened a new cardiac catheterization laboratory. The goal: to support cardiac health and bring world-class interventional cardiology care to the Hudson Valley and upper Westchester region.

“When it comes to cardiac emergencies, time is muscle,” said Dr. Giora Weisz, medical director of interventional cardiology at NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital. “Having a catheterization lab close to home means patients will have speedier access to expert care, and that leads to better outcomes, especially for those experiencing a life-threatening event such as a heart attack.”

According to the CDC, every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a heart attack. At NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital, the interventional cardiology program provides a variety of emergent procedures, including cardiac angioplasty to improve blood flow in narrow or blocked arteries for patients experiencing a heart attack or chest pain. Advanced cardiac services include diagnostic cardiac catheterization (a procedure in which a catheter is guided through a blood vessel in the heart to diagnose certain heart conditions) and minimally invasive procedures to open clogged arteries. The interventional cardiology program is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment including novel catheters to image the blood vessels from the inside. Additionally, physicians provide pacemaker and defibrillator implantation for treatment of arrhythmias.

“NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital and NewYork-Presbyterian Medical Group Hudson Valley cardiologists have been caring for our community’s hearts for decades,” said Stacey Petrower, president of NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital. “We pride ourselves on serving our community, and are pleased to now be providing emergent life-saving intervention, in addition to diagnostic and preventive medical procedures, close to home.”

NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital’s interventional cardiology program is open for emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and a regular schedule for diagnostic and non-emergent procedures. Patients who may require cardiac surgery have easy access to surgeons at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center for seamless continuity of care.
