An interview with Dr. Carl D. Reimers, MD, FACC, FSCAI, director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab at Northern Westchester Hospital; Northwell Cardiology Service Line director for Westchester County

A major component of the Seema Boesky Heart Center is the catheterization (cath) lab. Here, highly skilled interventional cardiologists diagnose and treat coronary artery disease, providing 24/7 lifesaving emergency care for conditions such as heart attack. The center also includes an advanced electrophysiology (EP) lab offering the best outcomes possible for heart irregularities; and local medically monitored cardiac rehabilitation. Their cath and EP labs are extensions of the nationally top-ranked cardiac program at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan.

How does the Hospital’s cath lab dramatically improve results for local patients?

When blockages cause a heart attack, every second can mean more permanent damage to the heart muscle. Before our cath lab opened, anyone having a cardiac event had to travel much farther, losing valuable time, to receive life-saving care. Now, right here in Mt. Kisco, our lab offers patients the gold standard of care: opening the artery within 90 minutes of first medical contact.

How does Northern Westchester Hospital’s connection with Northwell Health give community members access to more advanced care?

Our cath lab is an extension of the nationally renowned cardiac program at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, also part of Northwell Health. A leader in heart care, the Lenox Hill program has been ranked by Healthgrades among the top five percent of U.S. hospitals for cardiac services for six years in a row. Our team of interventional cardiologists treats patients at both hospitals. If necessary, local patients are seamlessly scheduled at Lenox Hill, receiving complex cardiac surgical care from some of the nation’s top cardiac experts. Anyone with a heart condition wants to be under this team’s care.
