Regaining a sensational smile
Q. My smile has become unattractive with age. How can I get the beautiful smile I always had or wanted?
“If you’re concerned about unsightly gaps between your teeth, teeth that are worn down, or the color of your teeth that have darkened with age, a smile makeover not only addresses all of these issues, but can make you look 15 years younger. Using a range of techniques from bleaching to porcelain veneers, we create beautiful and natural-looking smiles. Before any work is done, a photograph is taken and revised to reveal how your new smile will look. Once you love the look of trial veneers, the porcelain veneers are created, and you leave with the smile you’ve always wanted. We also share our approach to esthetics with other dentists through the classes we teach and our articles and chapters on cosmetic dentistry.”

Q. My teeth are so worn down, I can barely see them. I used to have such nice long teeth and now my face looks caved in. What can I do?
“Sometimes wear on teeth can be so severe that the front teeth become hard to see and the back teeth become so short that it collapses the lower third of the face. These extreme cases can be addressed with full mouth reconstruction, which involves crowning the back teeth at a new taller height (opening the bite), usually similar to the height of your original teeth. This allows room to add length to the front teeth, making them visible past the edge of the upper lip. The new teeth also can restore the missing face support and help correct the collapsed look many older patients acquire from years of wear.”

Q. I’m anticipating many upcoming parties and celebrations at this time of year. How do I avoid my usual weight gain while celebrating?
“Here are 10 tips for enjoying the season without packing on pounds:
1. Eat before you party.
2. Bring a healthy dish.
3. Find healthy holiday foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables.
4. Exercise regularly.
5. Wear form-fitting clothes. (Without realizing it you’re more likely to overeat wearing loose clothing.)
6. Use small plates.
7. Practice portion control. Fill half of your plate with vegetables and the other half with proteins and healthy starches.
8. Avoid high caloric drinks.
9. Take a walk after parties or large dinners.
10. Resist constant grazing by socializing away from the central food location.”

Q. What treatment do you recommend for body contouring?
“We use the latest technology for body contouring — truSculpt ID by Cutera that uses radiofrequency energy to heat and damage the fat cells, which are then permanently eliminated by the body. Treating a single large area, for example, can be completed in only 15 minutes with minimal discomfort, no downtime, and the additional benefit of simultaneously tightening the skin. Results from the noninvasive truSculpt ID treatment are visible within four weeks and some patients even see results within one day, although full results can be expected in three months. We are the only practice in Westchester to be designated by Cutera as a Center of Excellence. For patients with extremely loose skin, I use PDO threads or microneedling with RF radiofrequency to tighten the skin. I also use these state-of-the-art technologies to perform no-surgery face, neck, and eyelid lifting.”

Q. How can easy treatments with injectables make you look years younger?
“There are many simple and quick procedures with little or no downtime that make you look brighter and healthier. One example is to combine fillers, such as Voluma, Restylane, Juvederm and/or Radiesse, with Botox, to fill wrinkles and folds while lifting and smoothing the face. We can eliminate dark circles under the eyes, enhance your lips, and soften those hated vertical lip lines. It’s a perfect time to treat your neck area and make a sharper jawline. We offer the latest technology in lasers, skin tightening, and InstaLift sutures. You can have smoother, younger, brighter skin! Our office is happy to discuss and customize all procedures to fit your needs.”

Q. My eyebrows are so thin, it seems they’re barely there. Is there a way to make them fuller and thicker that doesn’t require a lot of ongoing maintenance?
“Microblading is a semi-permanent form of cosmetic tattooing and a wonderful way to have beautiful brows. Our browologists apply tiny, individual hair-like strokes, working with your natural eyebrow hairs for the most realistic look, regardless of the amount of hair present, while custom sculpting the perfect eye-opening arch for your face. We can create a single, double, or even triple layer brow tattoo, which generally lasts 18 months. And, now you can get them in one, two and even three different shades of pigment, all with a 3D Eyebrow effect.”

Q. What is the best way to care for your skin during this time of year?
“Give your skin a proper spring cleaning! This includes your skincare and makeup products, too. Check expiration dates on all your products and throw out anything that has been sitting around too long. Using expired products not only wastes time by applying inactive ingredients, it can also irritate the skin. Following these simple steps will keep your skin radiating season to season: Schedule a facial to deep clean and revitalize dull skin: a Hydrafacial is the perfect treatment to exfoliate, brighten, and infuse your skin with potent antioxidants. Apply sunscreen every morning and reapply it again before any outdoor activities: although the weather is warmer, it’s still so mild you might not feel how strong the sun is. Opt for a safe, sunless tan before all your trips and events: a spray tan gives you an instant glow in 10 minutes without the sun damage.”

Q. How can I lighten my hair to a beautiful blonde while conserving my healthy look?
“Bleaching is an oxidation process that lifts the original hair color to lighten your hair. But, this process penetrates the cuticle and degrades existing hair pigments, removing original color from the strands. The bleaching process also causes the hair color to change gradually, and depending on your natural color, may go through many stages of brown, red, orange, and yellow before reaching a white blonde shade. Unfortunately, not only do bleaching agents affect the color molecules in your hair, but they also weaken protein bonds, making the hair brittle and more fragile. However, lifting cream offers another option that does not make the hair dry by gently lifting the hair and taking longer to reach lighter levels. These hair lifting sessions help conserve the hair’s natural oils and keep its natural shine.”

Q. What is the benefit of a robotic hair transplant procedure?
“A robotic hair transplant procedure is the newest, most state-of-the-art method for performing hair restoration today. The robotic system includes built-in artificial intelligence (A.I.) and multiple optical sensors, which allow for the robot to intelligently select the healthiest hairs for transplantation while minimizing damage to the hair and scarring of the scalp. A 3D image of you also enables you to see various designs so you can select the perfect look for your facial structure. This process results in a faster, more precise procedure for the patient and a much more natural-looking result.”
