Robotic Surgery: Northern Westchester Hospital

A Higher Level of Precision

During surgery, the finely calibrated da Vinci robot replicates Northern Westchester Hospital surgeons’ hand movements, allowing tiny instruments to do precision work through small incisions, further enhanced by powerful magnification of the surgical site.

This advanced approach is used across a broad spectrum of specialties at the Hospital, significantly improving outcomes and recovery for patients diagnosed with benign or malignant colorectal, urological, gynecological, and thoracic conditions, among others.

Enhanced Visualization

The da Vinci has a magnified high-definition 3-D camera that literally places NWH surgeons inside the patient, giving them a better, more detailed 3-D view of the operating site than the human eye can provide.

Fluorescence imaging further enhances this unmatched vision, precision and control of minimally invasive robotic assisted surgery. This state-of-the-art imaging technology at NWH helps surgeons clearly identify and remove cancerous tissue while preserving as much normal tissue as possible.

Minimal Scarring

In order to successfully perform surgery using only a few small incisions, the surgical tools need to be tiny and state-of-the-art. Surgeons undergo specialized training to manipulate this technology, which offers seven degrees of motion — far beyond the limits of the human hand. Robotics has been instrumental at NWH – surgeons are able to perform highly complex and intricate surgeries with far less scarring, less pain and shorter recovery time for patients of all ages.

Better Outcomes from Experienced Surgeons

Of course, excellent and extensive training is key to maximizing the potential of the da Vinci robot. Recently, Northern Westchester Hospital was reaccredited as a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), an independent, internationally recognized patient safety organization. Northern Westchester Hospital has held the designation since 2017.

To qualify for accreditation, the Northern Westchester Hospital Robotics Program and its physicians underwent a rigorous, top-to-bottom review by the SRC, which evaluated all aspects of care, from pre-op evaluation, surgery, post-anesthesia, discharge, post-operative care to patient outcomes. Surgical floors, intensive care units, and emergency rooms, as well as robotics education for staff and patients, were all thoroughly evaluated.

With this accreditation, patients can feel confident they are being cared for by a team that is focused on quality and safety and continually extending our level of care.

Further inspiring patient confidence, eight surgeons from Northern Westchester Hospital were awarded Surgeon of Excellence in Robotic Surgery (SOERS) designation after a thorough review of their surgical outcomes data and volume of cases.

These surgeons include:

  • Michael Shaw, MD, obstetrics and gynecology

  • Navid Mootabar, MD, obstetrics and gynecology
  • Warren D. Bromberg, MD, FACS, co-director of the Minimally Invasive and Robotics Surgery Program, received a Master Surgeon of Excellence for robotic surgery (MSRS) in addition to a SOERS designation.

All this translates, quite simply, into the highest-level medical care. The robotic surgery capabilities at Northern Westchester Hospital enable surgeons to perform less invasive surgery with a greater level of precision. Patients benefit from lower risk of infection, decreased blood loss, earlier discharge from the Hospital, faster recovery times, less postoperative pain and minimal scarring.
