The Maternity Experience at Northern Westchester Hospital

What Separates A Good Birth Experience from a Great Birth Experience?

We are proud to help bring over 1,600 babies into the world each year – and our moms are happy to deliver here. In 2019, ninety percent of women who gave birth at Northern Westchester Hospital (NWH) said they would “definitely recommend” the Hospital to expecting parents.*

Our goal is to make you feel comfortable and affirmed. It’s important to us that you feel supported and informed throughout every step of your delivery and even before the big day. We work to get to know you weeks or months before your delivery. Our team works together to ensure safety, high-quality care, privacy, and comfort for you and your growing family.

We understand your worries about being pregnant during the COVID-19 outbreak. So please know that our level of care for you and your baby hasn’t changed. The only alterations are safeguards to keep you both safe and healthy. Here’s how we continue to keep you and baby safe.

We’re honored to be part of your family’s new beginning. Here’s what you can expect throughout your maternity experience:

Mother-Baby Navigator: Your Personal Guide

Our Mother-Baby Navigator, Lorraine Owens, BSN, RN, CCE, CBC, meets with you at 22 to 24 weeks to get to know you, your preferences, and your birth plan so we can work to give you the maternity experience you want.

Lorraine covers everything from the security procedures we use to keep infants safe, to our newborn classes and other resources available to you for support when you’re home. She walks you through the delivery process and gives you a tour of the hospital, introducing you to the nursing staff and familiarizing you and your partner with our labor and delivery suites.

Lorraine will stay in touch and provide gentle reminders in the days and weeks before your due date, if desired. To reach our Mother-Baby Navigator, please call (914) 666-1840.

Safety for You and Your Baby

In thinking about where to delivery your baby, it’s important to choose a hospital well equipped to handle any situation, safely. We’re proud to be able to safely care for all women, including those considered “high-risk”. Whether you’re pregnant with multiples, have high blood pressure, diabetes, or other potential complications, we have the expertise and technology to keep you safe.

Here’s how we’re keeping you and baby safe:

• Secured, unit-locked doors in labor and delivery and NICU/nursery
• We use Certascan technology to capture a high resolution scan of your infant’s foot prints. This allows us to identify infants, with certainty from the time of birth, throughout their stay, and for life. This technology helps us deliver the highest quality infant safety measures.
• On-site Anesthesiologists available 24/7
• On-Site Obstetricians available 24/7
• On-Site Neonatologists available 24/7
• Wireless fetal monitoring to allow laboring moms to move around
• All nursing staff is certified in Electronic Fetal Monitoring

We understand your worries about being pregnant during the COVID-19 outbreak. So please know that our level of care for you and your baby hasn’t changed. The only alterations are safeguards to keep you both safe and healthy. We’re screening all support people to make sure they’re asymptomatic. We take their temperature upon arrival and every 12 hours thereafter. We’re also testing all women in labor and those scheduled for a C-section upon arrival and during labor. This is rapid, easy testing with a swab. Learn more…

A Level III NICU

As a Level III NICU, we’re also fully equipped to stabilize and treat life-threatening emergencies and illnesses in newborns. Your baby benefits from our full complement of leading-edge maternity technology.

If your baby spends time in our NICU, we encourage you to be near your child and involved in their care. If you’re discharged before your baby can go home, a complementary room is typically provided for you. If you’re not able to physically be with your baby in the NICU, AngelEye technology offers your family secure live-streaming visual and audio access to your newborn.

Privacy

Your privacy is extremely important. Each of our postpartum rooms is completely private and has a bed, so your partner can be with you. Whether it’s to bond with your new baby, focus on nursing, or practice skin-to-skin contact, you will enjoy the peacefulness that’s offered by our private rooms.

Comfort: Your Preferences are Our Priority

We believe in couplet care (you and baby are cared for together by one nurse) which minimizes mother-baby separation. This family-centered approach allows your nurse to effectively communicate with both your obstetric and pediatric teams, which improves communication between all experts.

A major component of couplet care is “rooming in.” We encourage you to have your baby stay in your room with you, but if you need a little break, your newborn can always stay close by in our nursery.

We respect your religious and cultural preferences, and any dietary and special requests. You can enjoy your favorite music during delivery, and you’re invited to personalize your room with custom lighting and room temperature. Enjoy LED candles, eye masks, stress balls, and integrative therapies such as guided imagery, lavender or mandarin aromatherapy, and gentle-touch massage.

While breastfeeding offers many benefits to baby and mother, it’s not for every woman. The staff fully supports your choice. If you breastfeed, you and baby benefit 24/7 from our lactation specialists and counselors.

If you require a C-section, we offer a family-centered “Gentle-C” option that enables women to play a more active role in their birthing experience. A clear drape lets you witness your baby’s first moments. EKG electrodes are placed toward your back and side, rather than your front, so you can hold your baby seconds after birth for immediate skin-to-skin contact and the ability to begin breastfeeding right away.

High-Quality Nursing Care

New moms often tell us that the best part of their maternity experience at Northern Westchester Hospital was the great care they received from the nursing staff.

One mom remarked:

“Not only did the nurses do all they could to put me at ease and tend to me and my new baby, but they also helped my husband. After almost twelve hours of labor and delivery, I was so exhausted that I fell asleep shortly after our son was born. Left alone to care for our hours-old infant, my husband was understandably nervous. The nurses continually checked on him and helped him adapt to his first daddy moments. They showed my husband how to change our baby’s diapers, and, later, how to assist with breastfeeding and rock baby to sleep. As we cared for our newborn, the nurses made sure my husband and I didn’t forget to care for ourselves as well, reminding us to eat, rest, and stay hydrated. We couldn’t have asked for better care!”
