Physiatry is an integrated specialty that encompasses musculoskeletal problems whether it is related to the nerves, muscles or bones. Orthopedic surgeons deal with joints, bones, and ligaments, and neurologists deal mainly with nerve dysfunction or pain. Physiatrists, by contrast, integrate both of these specialties to treat musculoskeletal problems and pain utilizing basic pain management treatments, ultrasound-guided injections, physical therapy and other modalities. In this way, we can treat patients who have had strokes, cardiac surgery, orthopedic procedures, neurologic issues and other problems, all in the same office.
We are sometimes asked how endocrinology ties into physical therapy and pain treatment. Many of our patients have back problems, knee problems, and joint problems related to Type 2 diabetes and obesity. These patients need to modify their lifestyles with diet and exercise, but monitoring their behavior can be difficult. By including endocrinology into our services, we can more effectively monitor how much people exercise and what they eat. As a result, we can treat and often prevent metabolic problems.
As part of Millennium Medical’s whole-person approach to treatment, we encourage our patients to get treatment earlier rather than later, as well as taking preventative measures against worsening pain. Pathologic changes in the spine, once they occur, are difficult to reverse and heal. So we raise patient awareness by encouraging the strengthening the back muscles, improving posture, and becoming conscious of work habits. We teach patients how to exercise and stretch correctly and how to build their core to avoid deterioration.
