The Ritz-Carlton may get the bulk of the press attention but there are other hotels in White Plains to consider when looking for a big-city type of dining out experience.
Tucked in the Crowne Plaza Hotel (between The Westchester and the 60 S Broadway 24-story twin tower residential development) is the Mix Cocktail Bar & Kitchen. The snug, softly lit restaurant/bar space has long plop-down worthy couches, high-backed leather chairs, and colorful modern art.
The fab cocktails at the dual-sided bar are an excellent way to start, especially one of the limited edition winter offerings: apple cider mimosas and partridge-in-a-pear martinis.
The latter, says Chef James Shannon, “incorporates the sweetness of caramel along with the pear, blended with Kettle One Vodka. We wanted to create a special drink for our 12 days of Christmas cocktails, which is where the inspiration for the parrot top came from — it’s made from a shaved carrot, placed on a cut pineapple top. This is truly the most Instagrammable holiday cocktail.”

Complementing the smart libations is a seasonal, thoughtful menu that goes beyond the humdrum food offerings typical of many hotels — e.g., crab cakes, burgers, chicken lollipops….
Instead, there’s panko- and herb-crusted skillet bacon and jalapeno mac ‘n’ cheese, seafood stew with tomatoes and fennel, Captain Lawrence-braised boneless short rib, and a Gulf shrimp ciabatta sandwich dressed with spicy avocado cream.
Mix Cocktail Bar & Kitchen won this magazine’s Best of Westchester Readers’ Pick for Best Hotel Bar (Crowne Plaza won for Best Hotel) in 2017. Stop by for a drink and a bite and see if you agree with this readers’ selection.
