Yonkers Honors Former Mayor Angelo R. Martinelli

A Lifetime Achievement Award was bestowed upon the 89 year-old politician and publisher.

Present Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano and a collection of current and former local officials gathered yesterday afternoon at City Hall for a special ceremony recognizing the contributions of Angelo R. Martinelli.

Martinelli is Yonkers’ longest-serving mayor, serving six terms between 1974-1979, and again from 1982-1987. He has also been in the publishing business sine 1948, when Martinelli purchased Yonkers’ Gazette Press and launched what would become Today Media Inc., a multigenerational family business and parent company of local regional titles including Westchester Magazine and Hudson Valley Magazine.

Martinelli has additionally been Chairman of the Yonkers Chamber of Commerce since 1995,and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in 1984 by Mercy College. Most recently, he has been portrayed on the small screen by Jim Belushi in HBO’s 2015 miniseries Show Me A Hero, based on the drama surrounding the desegregation of Yonkers’ housing market in the 1980s.
