The Westchester police officer who was shot in the face Monday during a routine car stop is alive and expected to make a full recovery.
Officer Kayla Maher, a two-year Yonkers Police Department veteran, was hit in the jaw with a bullet from a Glock as she approached a suspicious car near the corner of Rumsey Road and Park Hill Avenue on Monday night.
Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, who visited Maher at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx on Tuesday, said “She’s a wonderful police officer. Heroic in what she did. Gutsy as we would expect her to be.”
According to Lohud, Maher left Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx Tuesday via police escort.
The incident started around 8 p.m. when a resident reported a suspicious car parked near the corner of Marshall Road and Ridge Drive. Yonkers Police Commissioner Charles Gardner said police do not know what the two men were doing there, but that the shooter had criminal charges pending.
Approximately five officers were involved in the shootout with two suspects, both of whom are New Rochelle residents, according to Gardner.
“Our officers at the scene acted heroically, and I’m very proud of them and the work that they did here,” Gardner said.
