World-Class Painters Create an Art-Filled Hudson Valley Retreat

As residents of the tiny town of Tivoli, artists Brice and Helen Marden were sad to see their local hotel shut down. So, in 2013, the couple purchased the historic 1906 property, turning it into a destination infused with funky flourishes of color and kitsch.

Today, Hotel Tivoli is vivified with gem-toned carpets, eclectic furniture, and inspired lighting, from mid-century Sputnik fixtures to luminous Murano glass. Each of the 11 stylish guest rooms has patterned Greek and Moroccan textiles and colorful metal-frame beds, while baths are generously stocked with Le Labo products. Meanwhile, artwork by the Mardens and their famous friends (don’t miss the second-floor portrait of Helen by Francesco Clemente) can be found throughout.

At The Corner, the hotel’s superb restaurant (serving locally sourced, Mediterranean-inspired cuisine), regulars dine on chicken tagine with cracked green olives and preserved-lemon couscous on the patio or in the intimate, art-filled dining room. (The busy bar’s artsy chandelier alone is worth checking out.)

After your complimentary breakfast, poke around town. Stroll past farmhouses and open fields just behind the hotel and then shop the main street, where artfully run businesses, like Tivoli Mercantile, Tivoli General, and the hotel’s own Corner Store, await.
