WMCHealth is set to break ground this summer on a new Critical Care Tower at its Valhalla campus to help offer even more aid.

In the wake of the pandemic, hospitals nationwide are pivoting to flexible spaces that can accommodate sudden, large-scale medical emergencies if necessary. In a bid to increase patient capacity while offering aid that is capable of adjusting to unforeseen situations, the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) is set to begin construction on a new Critical Care Tower on its massive Valhalla campus.

The 162,000-square-foot tower will feature five stories of cutting-edge critical care, with a price tag of approximately $220 million. While construction is slated to begin this summer, the building’s ribbon cutting isn’t expected until the winter of 2025. The tower, which will ultimately house a total of 128 private rooms, will be constructed directly adjacent to WMCHealth’s Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital and connected to Westchester Medical Center via a direct corridor.

The Critical Care Tower’s rooms will have the flexibility to be used as medical-surgical spaces, ICU rooms, and/or ICU step-down rooms, allowing WMCHealth to address patient needs in a wide range of potential situations.

“Critical care is in our DNA,” says Joshua Ratner, WMCHealth’s executive vice president and chief strategy officer, “and no one in the Hudson Valley is more skilled in critical care than our workforce.”
