Winter is Coming With Ommegang's Latest Game of Thrones Beer

Fans of the HBO series Game of Thrones have been waiting for winter, which arrives Sunday, July 16 when the series returns to television at 9 p.m. ET. Each season, while the houses of Westeros battle amongst themselves for the Iron Throne, Brewery Ommegang releases a beer for fans to sip while they watch the series unfold. And, as anticipated, the brewery is at is again.

The Cooperstown brewery recently announced the release of a new beer coming this fall. Winter is Here, a Belgian-style double white ale, will be released in October, the bottle featuring the Night King on the label and will be available as single 750ml bottles, on draft, and in a special gift pack.

“In this next season, we celebrate the long-awaited arrival of winter with a beer fit for consumption north of The Wall,” says Brewery Ommegang’s President, Doug Campbell, in a blog post on the brewery’s site. “Winter is Here is a fortifying and delicious double white, brewed with sea salt and white pepper, sure to keep you warm in winter, no matter how long it lasts.”

Winter is Here is brewed with pilsner malt, white wheat malt, and soft red wheat flakes. It will also be hopped with Saaz hops and spiced with white pepper, sea salt, coriander, and sweet orange peel creating a slightly-sweet malt flavor subtly balanced with hints of sea salt. While strong at 8.3 percent alcohol, the beer manages to drink quite lightly, according to Brewery Ommegang.

The gift pack will feature both the new brew, Winter is Here, along with the re-release of a fan favorite: Fire and Blood. The red ale, originally released in the spring of 2014 with an image of Daenerys Targaryen’s dragon on the label, is brewed with pilsner, spelt, rye, and other specialty malts hopped with Styrian Golding and German Tettnang hops. Finally, it is spiced with ancho chilies for a little extra complexity. The hue of the beer is a deep, dark red matching its name. Fire and Blood sits at 6.8 percent alcohol.

While fans won’t be able to sip on the new Winter is Here beer while watching Season 7 of Game of Thrones, they can sip on Brewery Ommegang’s most recent release Bend the Knee Golden Ale available on draft and in a series of three collectible 750ml bottles each adorning one of the three Great House sigils.

Now, sit back, grab a beer, and watch the premiere of Game of Thrones Season 7 on HBO Sunday, July 16 at 9 p.m.
