Hundreds of golf balls vie for “closest to the pin” at Quaker Ridge
|
Every golf outing large and small features at least one “closest to the pin” contest, but the Little Sisters of the Poor took the concept to new heights with the help of Wings Air Helicopters, a charter helicopter service based at Westchester County Airport. When the Bronx residence for the elderly held their 12th annual golf outing at Scarsdale’s Quaker Ridge Golf Club in May, donors had the opportunity to buy numbered golf balls that gave them a chance to win a merchandise prize.
The balls were loaded into the Wings Air helicopter, which then hovered over a target in front of the stately Quaker Ridge clubhouse. The event’s guests packed the patio outside the clubhouse and watched as the balls rained down on the flag in front.
About a hundred golfers and other donors participated in the fun. The helicopter ball drop itself raised about $2,000 to benefit the Jeanne Jugan Residence, which is operated by the Little Sisters of the Poor.
