White Plains Hospital will add open-heart surgery to its roster of vital services, cementing its status as a leader in cardiac care.
White Plains Hospital (WPH) has been expanding the scope of its cardiac services, and now the award-winning institution is taking a bold step in their long-running heart program. In the coming weeks, WPH will soon offer open-heart surgery, a first for the organization.
According to Dr. Kaare Weber, director of surgery and associate medical director for surgical services at WPH, the new service fills a gap in the hospital’s already formidable heart program. “In a little over a decade, White Plains Hospital has made several significant advancements in the level of cardiac care provided to the community,” explains Weber, pointing to catheterization labs founded in 2008 and a dynamic cardiac electrophysiology program established over the last three years.
“However, missing from this equation had been cardiac surgery. With our new cardiac surgery program, we will be providing sophisticated cardiac services, including aortic valve surgery, coronary artery bypass surgery, and mitral valve repair and replacement,” says Weber. “To support this program, we continue to transform our operating rooms, ICUs, and inpatient rooms. Included is a hybrid operating room, which will allow us to perform the latest cardiac procedures, including transcatheter aortic valve replacements.”
Weber is excited about offering more options when it comes to care. “Currently, nearly 80 percent of patients who need cardiac surgery leave Westchester County for care,” he says. “Through our partnership with the Montefiore Health System, White Plains Hospital will soon be at the forefront of cardiac surgery, with internationally renowned surgeons from Montefiore Einstein performing these highly complex procedures in Westchester.”
