After 26 years of managing Apple Banks’ Thornwood branch, Cathy Corbi has embarked on a new mission within the company: leading the bank’s newly acquired Mohegan Lake branch. Under Cathy’s leadership, Apple Bank has contributed to local community theater productions and co-sponsored various community initiatives, like the annual Fall Foliage festival.
Douglas Elliman Real Estate welcomes two of Westchester’s top-producing real estate specialists, Tory Miller and Debbie Goldenberg, to the firm’s Chappaqua brokerage. The two, formerly of Houlihan Lawrence, are now partnering as Douglas Elliman’s Miller Goldberg Team. Miller previously served as a marketing director for several Fortune 500 companies.

NEW BUSINESSES, RELOCATIONS, OPERATIONS
The county’s Industrial Development Agency (IDA) approved the Marathon Development Group $12 million in tax-exempt-bond funds to renovate the Madison House, a 99-unit affordable-housing complex in White Plains. There is no financial risk to taxpayers, according to the county. Construction will begin in November and the project is expected to take 18 months.
The Crowne Plaza Hotel White Plains revealed a $15 million facelift at the official grand opening ceremony on September 10, 2013. Over 150 guests attended the grand opening, including Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino and White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach.
Recologie plans to open its doors for New Rochelle’s Annual ArtsFest. After five years in the heart of Larchmont, Recologie has expanded to include a gallery and Vistro, a vegan/vegetarian café. Founder Maria Cisneros, of Pelham, along with her partner, New Rochelle’s Judith Weber, has created a multi-purpose venue designed to engage the entire community, which offers recycled and repurposed eco-conscious local and global fair trade products.
On September 16, real estate company Caspi Development held a reception to introduce the newest additions to the downtown White Plains food scene, Hastings Tea and noodle +. The event featured samples of traditional and herbal tea offerings from Hastings Tea, potstickers, dumplings, and noodle dishes from noodle +. Tenants, members of the White Plains business community, and government officials attended.
The Lexington Avenue Gym (LexAveGym) has moved into a new 5,000 sq ft space at 350 Lexington Ave in Mount Kisco. In addition to the personal training & boxing services they’ve offered for 12 years, they’ve added CrossFit and a variety of fitness classes. The facility is fully renovated and includes private bathrooms with showers and towels, plus free parking. The LexAveGym is an a-la-carte boutique gym that does not charge membership fees or registration fees; all services are paid by use only.
Rivermarket Bar & Kitchen, a farm-to-table restaurant and retail establishment, opened recently in the Hudson Harbor community in Tarrytown. Owners John Crabtree and Glenn Vogt incorporate three different concepts into one space: the bar and kitchen, a fresh market, and a wine and spirits section. The restaurant serves American cuisine with a Mediterranean influence. Executive Chef John Holzwarth, who has trained under Italian chefs Fortunato Nicotra and Lidia Bastianich, aims for the menu to include local ingredients and sustainable foods.
Chappaqua-based BioTheryX Inc. will receive a $289,518 grant from the National Institutes of Health to support the company’s cancer research. The money will fund a preclinical test in mice for a compound that could treat pancreatic and blood cancers.

IBM WINS $10 MILLION HEALTHCARE CONTRACT
Armonk-based IBM Corp. has been awarded a one-year, $10 million contract from New York City Health and Hospitals Corp. to build an analytics platform that aims to enhance patient care and improve operational efficiency. The IBM Enterprise Health Analytics platform will integrate and standardize data from eight repositories and scale them down to one healthcare data model. The platform will standardize information about patients, providers, locations, and reimbursement codes.
New research at Pace University’s Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems has found a way to detect cheating students taking online exams. The U.S. Department of Defense has shown interest in the research as a possible aid in its ongoing battle against computer hacking and cybercrimes. Through keystroke and stylometry biometrics, a software program that records a person’s typing patterns and linguistic style, the key-logger application can remember the behavior of a test-taker. This helps online instructors determine whether the person taking the exam is the same person enrolled in the class. According to Amar Gupta, dean of Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems, the college is introducing keystroke and biometrics in the lab and slowly expanding it to online education.
Yonkers graphic designer Gabriel Velez has teamed with a New York City software developer to create Voutche, a mobile software application that rates Facebook users on how safe their profiles are from cyber threats. Velez and his partner are also looking to expand the app’s use to other popular social media sites. They presented their work to a roomful of business executives, academics, and government officials at the Visa Global Security Summit in Washington last week.
