Computer science and coding might be on it’s way to becoming the new literacy, but fewer than 1% of high school girls see computer science as part of their future. However, a local Westchester organization is looking to shift the paradigm when it comes to women and computer science.
Girls Inc. of Westchester, located in White Plains, will be hosting a series of coding parties for middle school girls. This event will be in honor of “National Computer Science Education Week” and is the result of partnership between Girls Inc. and Google.
The coding parties aim to be interactive, fun, and educational. For two hours, girls who attend will have a workshop where they can experience a supportive environment to learn the power of coding. Different middle schools across Westchester have hosted this event including, New Rochelle, Bedford, Tarrytown, Rye Brook, Hastings, Port Chester, and Eastchester. According to a press release, more Coding Parties are on their way come, and in more locations.
