As the weather warms and restaurant sidewalk seating and terraces fill, the wines cool. It’s no surprise then that National Verdejo Day is today (June 12th) since Verdejo is a flawless warm weather wine and excellent for al fresco fare. Primarily grown in and indigenous to Spain’s Rueda region, Verdejo produces full-bodied, yet crisp wine with a rich, nutty flavor. The minerality gives balance to the herbaceous and citrus fruit flavors and makes for a refreshing drink on hot days. Verdejo is very food friendly and pairs well with light summer meals like fresh salads, grilled chicken and seafood.
Excellent and well-priced Rueda bottles such as Trascampanas Rueda 2012 ($9.99) and Vina Mayor Rueda Verdejo 2012 ($15.99) are sold at Westchester Wine Warehouse in White Plains, Best Wine Purveyors in Pleasantville, and De Prez Wines in Croton-on-Hudson, among other county wine retailers.
