Adopt-A-Dog, an Armonk dog (and occasional cat) sanctuary, is holding its 27th annual Puttin’ on the Dog Show and Festival at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park in Greenwich, CT. The festival runs from 10 am-4:30 pm on Sunday, September 21. The day of fun, which includes music, activities, and games, aims to raise money for the sanctuary and promote adoption of their dogs (and occasional cat. Don't forget the ocassional cat). The park is located at 100 Arch Street. Admission is $15 for adults, $5 for teens and seniors.
The New Rochelle Humane Society is hosting its 2014 Hounds on the Sound event on October 19 at Glen Island Park in New Rochelle. The event is a dog walk-a-thon around the park, followed by a day full of activities in the park including music, vendors, food, and games. Both cats and dogs will be available for adoption.

If you’re looking for a more posh way to help local animals, the SPCA of Westchester is hosting its Top Hat and Cocktails Gala at the Ritz-Carlton in White Plains on Friday, October 17. Well-behaved dogs are invited to come, and attendees will enjoy drinks and hors d’oeuvres, along with complimentary activities for dogs, including a canine ice cream bar, an animal communicator, and pet portraits. Human attendees can enjoy a silent auction and a dancefloor. The event is from 7-9:30 pm and costs $250 a person.
Pet Rescue is a non-profit animal rescue organization dedicated to decreasing the population of homeless animals in New York State. There is no official shelter, but their website is an easy to navigate database of all their cats and dogs spread out over various foster homes. Meet and greets are set up by appointments, or by attending their scheduled events. Their next Westchester event will be the Cat Place Open House in New Rochelle on August 29 where you can meet and greet their feline friends. The event is RSVP only, so call (914) 835-6955 to make an appointment.
Pets Alive Westchester is an animal sanctuary that aims to improve the lives of companion animals. Their animals are always available to meet without appointment, and they even offer online adoption applications for a speedy approval process. They are open seven days a week, and have adoption counselors on staff who are there to assist you in finding the perfect pet.
Although not an official pet organization, there are always animals in need of homes on Craigslist. The Westchester pets section offers not just cats and dogs, but a wide variety of adoption opportunities including hamsters, rabbits, turtles, and more.
