When It Comes To Golf, Nine Is Divine

Tried golf and found it a slog? Want to play more but don’t have many six-hour empty holes in your calendar? Instead of playing eighteen holes, try nine. It’s fun, it’s convenient, and it’s a quick way to get your golf fix without eating up your entire day.

This Wednesday July 29, the Met Gold Association is celebrating the USGA’s Play 9 Day at Doral Arrowwood in Rye Brook. For an entry fee of just $60, you get nine holes of competitive golf, range balls, golf cart, and a cocktail reception. Competition is open to men and women who are members of an MGA member club. It’s a nine-hole stroke play event with net and gross prizes.

Here’s the kicker: because it’s played over nine holes, the tournament tees off at 5:30 PM—leaving plenty of time to finish before dark.

Those of us who do it often know that playing nine holes has a lot of advantages; the time commitment is comparable to watching a movie or going out to dinner, it is less intimidating to newcomers as they gradually learn the fundamentals of the game, and the shorter round is family- and budget-friendly.

A USGA consumer study conducted by Sports & Leisure Research Group found that 60 percent of golfers see nine-hole rounds as an engaging way to introduce people to the game.
