Are you clueless when it comes to buying sheets but yearn for the zzz’s that are born from a truly comfy bed? Michelle Anderson, owner of home accessories boutique La Dentelliere in Scarsdale, answers our questions, based on her 30+ years of experience.
Does thread count really matter?
We are trained to believe that thread count is the end-all-be-all of choosing a sheet. However, it really is the quality of the cotton and the finish process that determines the feel. What you want are the long, strong, combed threads. The cotton is actually combed before being made into a sheet, and all of the short fibers and slubs are removed before weaving.
We’re tired just thinking about all the types of sheets out there. What are the differences?
What you feel in your hand should determine what you like for your body to sleep on. Sateen is very soft and silky, while percale is tightly woven and feels cool and crisp. Both are made with long-staple combed cotton, but they are woven differently for a different feel. Also a long-staple cotton, Egyptian cotton can be woven in a percale or sateen weave. But, contrary to what you might think, not all luxurious long-staple cotton comes from Egypt. We have found that the best sheets in the industry come from France and Italy.
Do I have to spend a lot of money on sheets?
Feel free to spend more on the sheets you sleep on every night, but no need to splurge on those used in your guest bedroom.
